Exactly How To Conquer Hypersensitivity

Caitlin A. Xavier | April 10, 2011

Those of you that have allergies know how incredibly frustrating and troublesome they can be. You get those red scratchy eyes, that tickle in the back of your throat that just won’t go away, your nose is all stuffed up and it feels as if somebody has stuffed cotton down your throat. In this article, we’ll talk about some of the causes of these allergies, and what you can do to get rid of them.

You can usually get allergies from two places. One is from plants, in the form of pollen, which is given off during springtime. You can also get pollen from certain plants during other times of the year. You can also get allergies from animals, such as dogs and cats, when they are kept as pets in the home. This is due to the dry flakes of skin that flake off and float around in the air.

Histamine is actually the main culprit in allergy symptoms. Your runny nose, dry cough, and itchy eyes are all because your body is producing histamine. This is one of the many chemicals that your body uses to fight off invaders. The stronger the invading for, or the more the amount of pollen or dry animal skin, the more histamine is produced.

So naturally, many over the counter anti-histamines will do a good job of reducing your symptoms. However, these can have some unwanted side effects such as high blood pressure, and drowsiness. With prolonged use, some of these products can cause health problems.

Making sure you stay healthy can do a good job of increasing your body’s natural resistance to those particles floating around, so you don’t have such a strong histamine reaction. This means you’ll feel less allergy symptoms. In order to stay healthy, make sure to eat a balanced diet filled with vitamins and minerals.

Many suspect that certain foods can greatly influence how you are affected by these allergy causing particles. These are foods that contain gluten, most dairy products, and many processed carbohydrates. If you avoid these foods, you may very well see a decrease in your allergic symptoms over time.

Allergies are definitely something to avoid at all costs. Especially if you have pets that you are allergic to, finding a solution is your number one priority.

To know the most magically reliable cat allergy treatment to rapidly and readily eliminate your allergic reactions, head on over to the popular cat allergy treatment page at once.

Does My Dog Have An Allergy To Fleas

Catherine V. Testaratti | January 26, 2010

Now who would have ever thought that your dog could be allergic to fleas? Well they can and as silly as it sounds it can be a very serious for some dogs. Heck, it’s pretty darn annoying for the pet owners too.

Flea allergies in dogs can begin as early as puppies but seems to be most prevalent in older adult dogs. Adult fleas will not live for a long time if they are not on a dog or cat. But that doesn’t really reassure you now does it?

First the adult flea will bite then it falls off but doesn’t survive. Then the eggs they leave go ahead and follow their proper life cycle. This problem will continue to manifest itself until you take control of the problem and eliminate the source totally.

If you want to keep your dog flea free, then you need to continue treatment. The symptoms can be painful to the dog and an annoyance to the owners. This chronic condition left untreated can lead to behavioral problems in your pet as well.

To determine if your dog is infested with fleas that might be causing an allergic reaction, you can look for flea dirt or fleas. The vet may want to test for mites if no fleas are visible. A noticeable increase in chewing and itching is a sure symptom of a flea allergy but can also be an indication of mites.

Humans are not immune to the dreaded fleabite. As we have said the adult flea will fall off the dog after it bites and you could become fair game. One or two bites is all your dog needs to get to start the allergic reaction in motion. Treatment is needed to keep this nasty irritation at bay as well as treating the house and yard.

Help your dog get relief from this itchy allergy by taking immediate action. Treat them with a dip or flea shampoo and a continued application monthly of the topical applied to the back of the neck. You dog will surely thank you, if he could!

Quick diagnosis and treatment will help relive your dog from his suffering. Chewing and itching along with hair loss are sure signs of a flea allergy. Additionally you might see lesions in numerous places over the dog’s body.

More serious infestations might require multiple treatments before results are noticed. Continued monthly treatments will eventually take affect ridding your dog of those nasty little nuisances. And you will see a happy healthier dog for all your efforts.

What Causes Mange And How To Treat It

Catherine V. Testaratti | January 21, 2010

We have probably all seen a dog afflicted with mange at some point in our lives. Mange is known as Demodicosis in dogs. The Demodex mite causes this itchy inflammatory disease and the identification of the particular mite can ascertain the harshness of the mange.

Cats as well as dogs can be affected with mange. Side effects can vary depending on the type of mite that inhabits your dog or cats hair follicle. Mange can lead to genetic disorders, lesions and immune system problems.

There are two forms of Demodectic mange that can affect your pet. Localized will effect a specific area whereas generalized will be in many places over the entire body. Once the vet determines which type of demodectic mange your dog has, proper treatment will be determined.

While many vets will say they do not know what might cause mange, some believe that dogs can be predisposed to this disease due to an immune system problem. Generalized mange will appear as redness of the skin and patches of lesions over the entire body. Localized mange will be around the face, trunk or legs of the dog.

There are three identifiable mites that are known to cause mange. While transmissions of two are unknown, Demodex canis has been determined to get into the hair follicle. It is assumed that this is transferred from the mother to the newborn through nursing.

Testing is done either with a urine sample if you are able to get one or by scraping a piece of the dogs skin. The vet will want to rule out that possibility of your dog having an infected hair follicle. They can also determine the mite by plucking a few hairs.

Localized mange can be cured easily by itself over a period of time. The generalized mange can be more difficult to cure. Lime-sulphur dips and constant medication can relieve some of the symptoms. There are some cases that are more severe and you will need to weigh your options with the vet for the best solution for the dog.

Once a diagnosis of mange is determined, treatment will be advised. It is important to remember that you will need to be diligent with treatment upon diagnosis to keep the disease from spreading. Skin scrapings will need to be tested until it is determined that mites are no longer found.

As with any chronic condition, it is suggested that you not breed a dog with chronic mange. Prevention may be as easy as maintaining the good health of your pet. Regular bathing and grooming and healthy diet can help prevent the onset of mange.

Dog Behavioral Problems – 4 Simple Solutions

James M. Hussey | January 20, 2010

Often, you may find your dog acting up, and if you’re contending with dog behavioral problems, it’s advisable to act as quickly if possible. If bad dog behavior is simply ignored, you may end up with a major issues on your hands. The good news is, there are a plethora of simple techniques to implement change in dog behavior issues in a humane and patient way.

Dog behavioral problems can vary from adorable, but annoying little problems, to full fledged threatening issues such as a dog attack. Though there are various causes of behavioral problems, the solutions are pretty consistent. The old saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” isn’t an excuse and with consistent training, you can overcome dog behavior problems. Let’s look at four user-friendly dog training tips.

1. Be Consistent. This is the absolute piece of advice when training any animal. You may be tempted to let them slide every once in awhile, but this will only serve to hinder your training. Keep giving your dog rewards as well as with corrections and your pet will begin to realize that you are absolutely the pack leader.

2. A System of Reward is Non-Negotiable. While many older dog training techniques, like putting your dog’s nose in their mess, may appear initially effective, they may actually produce more problems later on. Building up and praising your dog helps your dog associate good behavior with positive results, and is a very effective means of addressing even the toughest dog behavior problems.

In brief, positive reinforcement means that you reward a dog when he or she does what you are training him or her to do, and hold back the reward when they don’t. Even the most stubborn pet will begin to respond to these methods, when they are applied consistently.

3. Get a Crate. One of the simplest ways to put an end to destructive behavior is to provide your dog with clear cut boundaries. Crating them while you’re away, or when you need some space is an effective and humane method to control your pet. You may need to introduce them to the crate slowly, and give them time to get used to being confined. The key is to be consistent and reward them for controlling themselves in their crate. A crate should never be used as a punishment, insted as a quiet place for them to go and be at ease.

4. An additional cautionary note for you and especially your loved ones. Once the dog behavioral problems are addressed, and the corrective training has started, it is imperative everyone who deals with the dog use the same-exact training techniques. Everyone must be consistent in the handling of the dog. If not, your poor pooch will become very uncertain and may act out even more than before the positive reinforcement training was initatied.

Once you have these methods in place, you can easily begin to solve dog behavioral issues without undue stress to you or your pet. A well behaved pet is a happy pet and you’ll appreciate the lack of destructive and potentially harmful dog behavioral problems.

Beliefs About The Mandarin New Year Rat

John Chan | January 19, 2010

The Chinese culture has a special space for the rat symbol. Let us explore about the Chinese New Year rat symbol and it’s special characteristics.

People in general wouldn’t like to be linked up with a rat beyond the Chinese traditions. That’s because for most westerners, the rat is a tiny, dirty and shady creature that stays in the filthy places. However, great Chinese thinkers draw a different conclusion for the image of this rat.

One of the virtues of the rat is intelligence. The great Chinese thinkers also feel that the rat can be extremely hardworking and resourceful animal together with being in complete command of things. In fact, they are classified to be perfectionists! These are some of the characteristics that the Chinese philosophers have discovered in Chinese rat people.

According to the Chinese culture and traditions, each New Year has an animal allotted to it. Behind it are a lengthy process and a legend that follows the assigning of such special animal symbols to the years. But as the lunar calendar goes, there are basically twelve animals that are repeated after every twelfth year.

The rat possesses a very special place according to ancient Chinese tradition. Legend has it that the twelve animals that form the cycle were made to compete in a race. All the time the ox was winning the race without knowing that the rat was riding on its back. Just when the ox was about to reach the finish line the rat jumped off his back and secured the first position.

The year of the rat marks the beginning of the whole animal legend. Hence, when the year of the rat returns, it is rare occasion because it means that an entire cycle is completed and a new one has started.

Hence, we see that the rat is well-known for his innovative character and intelligence. This shrewd animal can burrow into any kind of problem and find a path to succeed in its aim. Hence, it is appreciated for its sharpness and intelligent personality.

On reading the character sketch drawn up by Chinese philosophers one would actually not feel that bad if one’s personality was to be compared with the Chinese concept of the rat’s personality traits. Nonetheless the idea is difficult to absorb for the west because of their own traditional perception of the animal.

Compatibility issue is a different aspect which is quite mysterious with respect to the twelve animals of the 12-year cycle. The process that led to these connections made by the Chinese philosophers are quite mysterious but they have drawn certain conclusions as to which animal sign is compatible with which other animal and which is not.

It’s amazing to know that the rat has great compatibility with the monkey. But where do the philosophers get this conviction is still unknown. However, these beliefs exist in China. From the ancient era, the year of the rat is believed to be the sign of protection and wealth.

The Chinese new year rat has important symbolic significance. To read further on Chinese new year crafts follow the hyperlinks.

John Chan | January 18, 2010

You will see that the New Year parade holds a most important place in Chinese New Year. Learn about the background of the parades in both traditional and contemporary China.

New Year parade is one event which is closest to a Chinese heart. The fancy spectacle which is part of the parade goes to prove how much the Chinese people are conscious of their past traditions and how they like to show to the whole world what they mean to them. Parades are the best way to prove this point to the whole world.

China has one of the oldest cultures spreading over about five thousand years. Over such a long time the country’s culture has seen many changes some of which is fascinating to modern man and has evolved the way it is today. Therefore Chinese locals have tremendous pride over their culture.

The Chinese New Year parade is an occasion which is renowned for all that it represents of the ancient Chinese traditions. What is Dermatophilosis And Can My Dog Have It

Catherine V. Testaratti | January 15, 2010

Dogs and cats are susceptible to skin irritations due to wet fur and the fleas and ticks they are exposed to daily. Dermatophilosis is a skin disorder that is usually contracted from farm animals such as sheep, cows and horses. It is typically found in warmer, more humid climates.

If you scratch off an infected area of the yellow crust, you will notice that there are many hairs underneath due to the follicle being impacted. This condition is very common in dog and cats. It is best to get your pet to the vet for testing to stop the spreading.

Testing from the vet is necessary for a diagnosis. If the dog is scratching a lot and you notice pus from this area, it more than likely is Dermatophilosis. Proper diagnosis is needed to determine treatment.

The vet will take a sample of the infected area to run tests. Be sure that he knows that you have been around farm animals so he can test for Dermatophilosis. Once the vet has determined that it is Dermatophilosis, treatment will be prescribed.

This condition can transfer to humans so we suggest you wear protective gloves when administering medication. Your vet might prescribe a certain shampoo for your dog if the condition is not too severe. As with all medications, read the directions and be consistent with treatment.

In order for medications to be effective, we must be consistent with administering them. If the Dermatophilosis is severe, the vet may prescribe an antibiotic to be taken orally. Penicillin is the norm but it could be amoxicillin or another type of antibiotic as well.

As with all medications, the vet will allow some time to pass before he checks the dog again. After about 2 or 3 weeks, he will reschedule another appointment. You should start seeing results in your dog in about a week to 10 days.

With skin conditions like this, you want to be extra careful. It is possible for the dog to pass this condition onto a caregiver or a family member if they suffer from an immune deficiency. Take caution if necessary and quarantine the dog in a safe place away from people.

As with illness, you want to make sure that you apply all medications while wearing protective gloves. Some skin conditions can be highly contagious and cross contamination is possible. Be sure to wash your hands regularly when dealing with any skin condition on dogs and cats.

Your Dog and His Diet

Catherine V. Testaratti |

As the responsible car giver to our pets, we need to be sure that we give them a good balanced diet. That we can be sure is going to help them live a healthy life. With so many foods to choose from how do you know which is best?

Dog, like humans have needs where their diet is concerned. But also like humans, some might need more or less of certain things so it’s always best to check with your vet once you decide on a certain diet. With dogs having a major part in our family’s lives, we need to make sure we provide the proper nutritional needs.

Dogs diet needs to consist of not only meats because they are carnivores, but they also need a daily allowance of vegetables and grasses. Knowing what your dogs needs are can help you keep them healthy. After all, they are part of the family right?

Back in the times when dogs were responsible for their own nourishment, their diets were different than from today. They hunted live prey and ate it uncooked coupled with a little grass and whatever the fruits and berries of the season were. Today, can you even conceive of your dog eating fresh game?

Today it is not near as socially acceptable for dogs to eat their kills. I know that it’s hard for us domesticated humans to understand but dogs and cat as like most animals are born hunters. We have, over the centuries, trained them to rely on us for their nourishment.

The origin of the dog’s breed as well as the lifestyle of the dog can determine the diet necessary. Lap dogs of course are not going to have the same requirements as a hard working police dog or say a dog from the Artic Circle. Make sure if you are not certain about the needs of your dog concerning it’s diet that you check with your vet or the internet.

While traditional commercial foods are good, try to stick with the premium brands. These foods are tested on “feeding trails” and the dogs are monitored throughout all stages of their lives. Typically these foods are designed with the right dietary needs met.

Some of the downsides to commercial processed foods are that they do contain preservatives that will break down some of the nutritional value of the food. Additives are usually added to meet certain nutritional requirements as well. If you are uncertain about the food, your vet will usually carry good premium brands so check with them.

Just remember that you must supplement your dogs diet with meats and vegetables if you are only feeding them dry food. Whatever you decide to do about your dogs diet, make sure that you couple that with exercise and lots of love. Dogs are truly man’s best friend and they deserve to live happy healthy lives as well.

Is Peeing a Sign of Submissive or Excited Behavior

Catherine V. Testaratti |

I think that as a new pet owner, we have all experienced this particular situation when with a new puppy or dog. Urinating when excited is a common problem with puppies. If you are also having this issue with your adult dog that is new to the family, there is a common explanation.

After first taking your dog to the vet for a checkup to make sure there are not medical problems; then we know that your dog suffers from submissive/excitement issues. This is very common in puppies and very submissive adult dogs so don’t worry, it can be fixed. You will be surprised at how fast we can correct this behavior.

As you stand over you dog in a dominant position or face her looking into her eyes and there is not an issue with peeing then, we know your dog suffers from an excitement issue. If your dog pee’s when in trouble or scared or you are being dominant over her, then it’s a submissive issue. Both of these problems are dealt with in a calm and reassuring manner.

As with children, dogs work well with praise. Teach your dog a couple of tricks like sitting, stay or roll over and then reward him for his success. With a submissive dog, approach at their level, pet under the chin not on the head and naturally, no yelling.

If there are accidents with the peeing, don’t respond, just clean it up. But remember to praise the dog when they pee in their appropriate spot. Rewards and positive affirmation are always the best medicine.

Having a puppy that pee’s from excitement during their first year is not uncommon. Adult dogs will get excited too when you arrive home from work or have guests, but just don’t react to the accident. Keep a calm tone, clean the mess and remember to make a big deal when they do go in the right place.

While playing with your puppy, he can get excited and pee so make sure you do all the playing out in the yard or in a protected area. As we mentioned before, if there are accidents, do not react and eventually you will see this problem subside. We can’t use the word praise enough so remember to make sure you acknowledge the good deed.

High energy greetings upon arrival home can also set off the excitement peeing. If you arrive home and the dog is excited and jumping around, we suggest you ignore him until he calms down. Keeping the excitement to a minimum can help correct the peeing problem.

Hard as it is and tough as it might seem, it will work. So ask your guests to not engage the dog until the excitement has worn off, then they can greet the dog with a quiet, calm hello. Allowing the excitement to wear down before greeting will also discourage the excitable behavior and eliminate the accidental peeing.
