Anne Gable | February 4, 2012Arranging and organising services related to funerals are usually taken care of by undertakers, who are also called funeral directors. To achieve success in this profession the person performing these tasks should have certain important and unique skills and attributes.
Since an undertaker’s services may be required at any time of the day, the person venturing into this profession should be willing to be on call at all hours. He should be ready to spend most of his time outdoors because of the nature of the job.
To become an undertaker, a person must be able to communicate well and should accommodate the opinions of others. He should be able to handle and interact with people of different age groups and people having different social and cultural backgrounds. He should be compassionate and should understand others’ feelings. As an undertaker, he is also required to comfort the family members in time of grief, and he must not allow pain or sorrow to cloud his abilities.
As an undertaker, a person should project a dignified and serene personality, while taking care that his behaviour doesn’t intensify the sorrow of the grieving family members and friends.
Knowledge of different religious beliefs, practices and sentiments, and due respect for these greatly helps undertakers in succeeding in their profession. As different people follow different funeral rites and methods, it is advantageous to have knowledge of these.
A successful undertaker will essentially possess good organizational skills and managerial abilities. He should also have leadership abilities and must be able to interact with a wide range of people – from the clergy members to the local florist.
As the undertaker will shoulder the responsibility of getting all clearances and following all regulations related to the ceremony, he will have to thoroughly know such procedures and legal matters. He will need to be fully aware of rules to be followed with respect to obtaining death certificates or insurance payments.
Finally, an undertaker should know driving and should possess a valid driving license, as he may have to drive hearses and limousines.
