Oral Conscious Sedatives Are Not Allowed During Pregnancy
Hannah Wright | October 14, 2010Oral conscious sedation isn’t new to dental care but some area dentists say it’s becoming more popular. One dentist at a local dental clinic says he has been practicing sedation dentistry for years. Having a patient totally comfortable, as his wisdom tooth is pulled or as root canal or crown procedures are done, is definitely making the process a lot easier.
Medication is given to patients in tablet or capsule form that makes them more relaxed and sleepy but there remains to be a small level of consciousness just enough for them to be able to respond. The type and amount vary depending on individualized needs of the patient. The apprehension level as well as the anxiousness dictates the choice to make. If others went well with one dose, others will need more.
Oral conscious sedation has never brought any headache for this dentist. Properly trained people will not be worried of any safety hazards. You need 35 pills to reach the harmful dose. It, however, must not be used on pregnant or nursing women.
More than 100 million Americans evade dentist appointments because of fear. A lady shared her fear can be traced back to a dental appointment in her teenage years. She doesn’t remember what she was having done, but she remembers feeling a lot of pain.
Not all patients who opt to have their dental work done do so out of fear. Sometimes sedation dentistry is simply a way to make patients more comfortable for longer or more difficult appointments. Few patients would be able to sit through an appointment that long without the medication.
There is one patient who says she is not afraid of the dentist. She goes every six months for a checkup and a cleaning but she’s used the sedation method on three occasions for crowns. She fell asleep as they were doing the procedure but if they asked her to turn her head or open wider, she said she could. The only inconvenience is that sedation patients have to have someone drive them to and pick them up from the dentist’s office.
Sedation dentistry was not part of this dentist’s plan several years ago. All he wanted upon attending the course was to educate himself and to have something to share to the people he teaches. As he goes back to his office, he immediately had three volunteers to be patients and from that point he was sold.
The whole team is required to take part in taking care of the patient’s dental procedure. The moment the medication takes effect, management of the patient should be done. In addition to the pleasant experience promised to the fearful and anxious patients, this process can actually extinguishing the cycle of fear. There are some patients who will need sedation even for simple procedures like cleaning and more so on challenging procedures. Impending dental problems that have long been ignored may be avoided by doing this.
