Snacking for Diabetics – Can I Eat What I Crave?

Sandra Hall | November 18, 2011

Although it is a well-known fact that diabetics should watch what they consume, that does not imply that they should only consume three moderate meals per day. Snacking is essential for diabetics, particularly since they require maintenance medications that lower blood sugar levels. So, it is likely that their blood glucose levels will fluctuate throughout the day, so it is required to keep these stabilized by consuming heart-healthy noshes every now and then. But the question is, what are the snacks that you can eat up as a diabetic?

Broadly speaking, diabetic snacks should comprise of high-fiber and low-calorie bites. Foods that are highly processed and highly sweetened should be warded off, as this can only lead to prompt increase in blood glucose levels that will break up after a while. This can lead to further cravings, and as a diabetic, you do not want to overeat.

You should also pay care to the amount of food that you consume as snacks since you need to manage food intake. A great means to control your snacks and to make a point that you are clinging to your diabetes diet plan is to plate your snacks. Catch a bag of chips, put a small portion in a plate, then seal the bag. This way, you can still eat up in moderation, and at the same time gratify your cravings. If you have a single-serve bag, then that is a perfect alternative for snacking.

Diabetics can have a variation of snacks in their diabetic food list. You can pander on nuts, such as cashew, walnuts, and almonds. These are rich in “good” fat and protein, which do not rapidly increase one’s blood sugar levels. An oz. of these nuts is enough for a single serving since they are generally high in calories.

Picking on raw veggies is besides a great way of snacking for diabetics. You can even dip them in a light salad dressing or yoghourt for a heart-healthy but satisfying snack.

To discover more on what can diabetics eat and a snacks for diabetics that is certainly simple to make and create.

Is It Help Or Hype? – Free Diabetic Diet Plans

Jimmy Lewis | January 26, 2010

Free diabetic diet plans are popular and are offered abundantly to diabetic patients. If you carefully weigh your options when picking a diabetic diet plan, you can sometimes find some effective free ones. The American Diabetic Association and other fellow patients experiencing diabetes are just a few of the many information-filled resources that can be used to learn about diabetic diet plans. Diabetics must make themselves knowledgable about diabetic diet plans so that they can make a smart choice about free plans. The sad fact is that sometimes free plans are not always offered by people with sincerity.

An example is a someone who was diagnosed with diabetes and began looking on the internet for any information that was relevant for him. He learned in a short amount of time that there were possibly thousands of sites with free diabetic plans available to anyone who was able to get on line. This person discovered a website advertising a free diabetic diet plan as well as supplements that were “all natural herbals” and considered a necessary part of the overall plan. The diabetic diet plan was totally free; however, the important, all-natural supplements had to be purchased. It turned out these supplements were cinnamon, which is one of the ways to lower glucose levels in the blood, and recently been under investigation. If you’re not paying attention to this sort of sales pitch, you can end up wasting a lot of money on questionable supplements that aren’t necessary or even proven effective. While this scenario meant the only unnecessary cost was out of pocket, there are other situations where the possibility of dangerous effects to someone’s health could be the result.

Another story to reflect on was related by a diabetic person who went searching for information on line after being diagnosed for diabetes. She found a site that was giving away a diabetic diet plan as well as offering supplements that were suppose to help decrease the blood glucose levels that can be affected by food. This person chose not to buy the offered supplements, but did print out the diabetic diet plan that was free. She then sat down with her dietician and they proceeded to analyze it completely. There were quite a few usable aspects of the diet that were easy to add into a diabetic diet plan for her. However, after analyzing the supplements that were being sold on the website they found out the ingredient was chromium, which is also being reviewed for it’s effectiveness in lowering the levels of blood glucose. The catch is that anyone can purchase chromium easily at most health food stores or drugstores, and it isn’t necessary to purchase it over the internet. In addition to that, it hasn’t been decided that it’s necessary to add chromium to a diabetic diet at the this time.

You will need to specially design your own diabetic diet plan after you have become knowledgable about other diabetic diet plans available. The diabetic exchange plan is a good source which includes foods from all food groups, which is very important whether the plan is free or purchased. A diabetic diet plan’s goal should be to educate and inform diabetics on how to control diabetes instead of being offered to try and sell anything. It is common for people with diabetes to want to help others by swapping information they have acquired instead of trying to make money off their diabetes.

Diabetics are basically a group of individual consumers with the same goals. It seems there are lots of products being sold which specifically target diabetics, and their families and friends alike. You will find that most diabetics are truly overwhelmed with information in the beginning, and may have trouble discerning what is true for them and what is not. It’s up to you to make use of your resources such as a physician, registered dietician, diabetic associations, library, and any help groups to learn what works and what doesn’t, and even you might be someone who will be offering a free plan someday.

Diabetes In Kids Resolving Dietary Concerns

Antoinette R. Wallace |

Gone are the days when diabetes was restricted to just adults. These days, kids too have diabetes. Honestly, there are many children across the States alone who suffer from diabetes. Though there are a few factors which make a contribution to diabetes in kids, it is their diet that counts the most. So, if you would like your child to deal with diabetes, it’s really important that you take care of what he eats.

Cutting down on the quantity of sugar and sweet things is the 1st and the most obvious thing to do to control diabetes. Kids are keen on sweet things and like to chew on chocolates, cakes, pastries and other sweet things. Such sweet things are a no-no for diabetic kids. But, if your kid wants to munch on something sweet, you could consider giving him desserts like frozen yogurts or fruit salads. They’re low on sugar and will help keep blood sugar in control.

You must not be crossed. You should understand that sweet things are not the sole malevolent that you have to deal with here. Even salty things like pizza, hot dogs, burgers and bagels are a problem. These edibles are kind of high on carbs. the carbohydrates are digested rather fast it might also lead to increased blood sugar levels. Easy trick – ensure that you kid doesn’t eat outside too frequently.

Packed foods are also a cruel no-no for diabetic children. Chips, cookies, nachos, wafers and so on should be kept away from diabetic kids. These foods contain high amount of starch and trans fats. Both starch and trans fats are known to escalate blood sugar levels further. This can make your diabetes even worse.

Ensure that you usually serve your child home cooked food. These foods are very healthy in nature and alongside go a great distance in keeping a tab on the blood sugar levels. It is advised to increase the intake of full grains in the dietary pattern. This is as they contain complicated carbohydrates which take time to digest and so helps normalize the sugar levels of the blood. In this context it is perfect to go in for whole grain pasta or whole grain sandwiches.

Also, attempt to include more of vegetables in your children’s diet. You might add a bit of vegetables to the pasta. Or you could make vegetable sandwiches for your youngster. You need to create engaging paths to make your kid eat his regular dose of veggies.

Only a few of the children like home cooked food at the first example. As responsible parents, it is your duty to ensure that they develop a liking for the meal which they might have to live on for their lifetime.

While they’d realize it at some point, so long as they’re youngsters, you have to be careful about their diet.

Diabetics Must Look After Their Feet

Antoinette R. Wallace |

Presence of high levels of sugar in the body is known as Diabetes. It is a health condition that might have its effect on assorted body parts with feet being the most influenced. This is the reason why diabetics are suggested to take additional care of their feet, to avoid any problems.

Diabetes could have effects on your feet in varied ways. For some, the condition might damage the nerves present in the feet and lead to the condition called peripheral neuropathy. In this condition, since the nerves get damaged, any damage that may happen to the feet is not easily detectable.

Diabetes also obstructs the smooth flow of blood in the body. Due to unnatural blood circulation, any wounds or injuries take longer than normal to fix. Diabetics are also highly subject to suffering from feet infections because diabetes takes away the body’s capability to fight infections. This is the reason why many diabetics suffer from foot ulcers.

If you are suffering from diabetes, you must care of your feet. These are some pointers that may help you in this.

First and most vital thing is to maintain proper hygiene of your feet. Clean your feet correctly and do this several times a day. Best thing to do in this regard is to wash your feet with halfhearted water and a top quality antibacterial soap. After each wash, dry your feet correctly to make sure that no moisture is left in your feet. Moisture can lead to fungus infection on feet. Use some talcum powder to make sure that your feet have properly dried.

Regular inspection of your feet is a must. At the end of the day, spare a few minutes to your feet. See whether there are any ulcers, cuts, sores or any other kind of bruises. In case you find any, make sure that you go and see a doctor.

Next important thing is the acceptable choice of footwear. Wear only those shoes that fit your wonderfully. Ill-fitting shoes could hurt your feet. Wear the sort of footwear that permits your feet to respire. Shoes that let moisture breed may result in infection.Female diabetics must avoid wearing any heels.

Further, it is critical that you clip your toe nails continually. Your toe nails are mud traps and therefore you need to get rid of them as fast as they grow. Cut the nails properly and remove any mud besieged in the cuticles.

So, if you are suffering from diabetes, do take additional care of your feet.

Managing Diabetes Through A Correct Dietary Regimen

Kim Allarie | January 6, 2010

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are progressive physical conditions for which there is no cure. Fortunately, it is possible for people with either form of diabetes to lead a normal, full life as long as they take the time to properly manage the illness. An extremely critical step in treatment of this disease is implementation of the correct diet regimen.

In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas produces little or no insulin. This lack of insulin causes an excessive amount of glucose to collect in the bloodstream, rendering the body unable to produce the energy it needs. Eventually, the body becomes unable to produce insulin at all. While insulin injections are mandatory for Type 1 sufferers, they can supplement their management of this disease by implementing a healthy dietary regimen, which will serve as a complement to the required insulin treatments.

Various studies have shown that the amount of carbohydrates (a category of foods that includes sugars, starches, and fiber) consumed will greatly impact the amount of insulin needed and the maintenance of blood sugar control in Type 1 sufferers. There is a balance that must be maintained between the amount of carbohydrates consumed, insulin, and physical activity that is necessary for maintaining the proper levels of glucose (blood sugar). If any of these factors fluctuate excessively, this can throw sugar readings into an unstable state. Thus, those individuals who are afflicted with Type 1 diabetes must be extremely careful to ingest a consistent amount of carbohydrates in order to keep pace with their mandated insulin doses.

With Type 2 diabetes, the problem lies not in the body’s production of insulin, but in it’s response to insulin. Type 2 diabetes stems from being obese and overly inactive. Therefore, nutritional goals for those with the Type 2 form of diabetes are somewhat different as well. Here, the main focus should be on losing and controlling body weight. The vast majority of Type 2 patients are too heavy or grossly overweight. Meal planning for these people should involve reducing their calorie intake, eliminating or cutting down on foods high in saturated fat, an even distribution of carbohydrates, and the replacement of some carbohydrates high in saturated fat with healthier monounsaturated fats like peanut butter, almonds, and other types of nuts. Not only will this diet serve to cause weight loss, it will stabilize the critical glucose levels.

Following this diet along with increasing the level of physical activity will reduce insulin resistance, and improve glucose control as well as aiding in weight loss. Carbohydrate consumption should come from healthy whole grains, pasta, brown rice, beans and fresh fruit and vegetables rather than heavily processed foods. Once in a while, it is ok to splurge on some junk food as a special treat. However, on those days when cake, candy or other sweets are consumed, one must then ensure that their usual daily intake of certain carbs like rice, pasta or potatoes is adjusted accordingly as well. By doing this, you will preserve the correct healthy ratio between sugar and total calories.

Diabetes is a serious disease which can create acute health concerns and possibly death. In many instances, it can be treated by means of changes to your diet. If you’re looking for a diabetic diet plan or other tips on managing the condition, check out the Diabetes Treatment site.

What’s The Best Diet For A Diabetic Patient?

Karl Graus | November 23, 2009

Diabetes is a disease that raises the glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream to higher than normal levels. This is caused by many different things : your body’s resistance to insulin, or a pancreas that doesn’t generate the proper amount of insulin for you to function properly. Insulin is a hormone that the body uses to convert glucose into energy. In either situation, it is very important for diabetics to maintain control of their blood sugar levels so that that can avoid serious health problems, including the risk of falling into a diabetic coma. The proper diet for diabetics has been a subject of some contention in the past.

For a very long time, those with diabetes were told to completely stay away from all carbohydrates and sugars. Sugar was regarded as the worst offender as it is more easily turned into glucose, which means it reaches the bloodstream more quickly than other carbohydrates. Many artificial sweeteners have been created that are supposed to replace sugar in a diabetic diet.

Nowadays, that thought process has been relaxed a bit, as physicians have come to terms with a diabetic’s inevitable exposure to sugar at some point. While some artificial sweeteners do not contain calories or carbs, they’re still not completely safe in a diet for diabetics for other reasons.

Ultimately, the diet for diabetics that should be followed is identical to a healthy diet for anyone. It’s a fact that the diagnosis of diabetes shouldn’t prevent people from eating all of the foods they enjoy most. The difference is, it is essential that diabetics take the time to monitor their daily carbohydrate intake, and limit it if necessary. Sugars and starches both are classed as carbohydrates, so dishes made with pasta and potatoes need to be downsized just the same as anything made with sugar.

Basically, your best bet is to eat more veggies and fruits as a diabetic. These foods include natural sugars that the body can use but are different from glucose in enough ways to keep them from increasing the blood glucose level. Also, they have more fiber, which is not only instrumental in helping the body get rid of waste, it also makes you feel full, which leads to lower calorie consumption.

You don’t have to make one meal for the diabetic and another meal for the remaining family members. As we said, the most effective diet for diabetics is the exact same foods that your whole family should be eating anyhow. This should be a balanced diet of plenty of fruits and vegetables, along with the right amount of proteins and starches, and only a few fats.

Karl writes about subjects like diet for diabetics and best diet for diabetics on his blog.
