It is very important that you avoid all foods that you have developed an intolerance to. This is to allow your body a chance to recover from the trauma of dealing with the food stuffs. It is tiring for your organs to process these foods so the fewer you present to it the better for you. Sometimes as you change your diet away from the foods that upset you to newer foods, you will find that due to you eating more of the new foods that you then develop an intolerance to those foods too.

It is important to monitor what you eat and to be aware that this can happen. It is also important for this reason to maintain as wide a diet as possible. This can be difficult, as many people find foods that dont upset them and stick to those as the wider range of foods you eat, the more likelihood there is that you will be intolerant to one or more of them.

Delicious pasta dishes are only a crock pot away. While it is true that pasta can be a bit tricky in the crock pot, with a little knowledge you will soon be turning out perfect pasta. There are several ways you can do pasta when you use the crock pot, and it all depends on what recipe you decide to make.

Putting on the Kettle

In some recipes, it is recommended to cook your pasta completely before adding it to your recipe. Alternatively, your crock pot contents might be served on a bed of noodles. You may find this works well with stroganoff, roasted meats with sauces, and other similar recipes.

Other recipes may suggest that you cook your pasta until it is just a little tender before adding it to the crock pot. The pasta finishes in the pot with the rest of your meal for the last half hour or so. This approach works well with dishes like casseroles, chicken Alfredo, and similar recipes. Because the noodles finish up in with the sauce, they will soak up the flavors and seasonings that have been cooking all day.

It is true that cooking your pasta separately takes more work on your part. Instead of just dishing up, you need to boil the water and cook the noodles. This method does make sure your noodles are just right, but it will not work with every crock pot pasta recipe.

Tossing it in the Pot

Some recipes are written for uncooked pasta. These recipes are less work for you in the long run, though you will still need to add the pasta towards the end in most recipes. You could use this technique if you were making Chicken noodle soup, minestrone or ramen. For normal pasta, you will want to add it into the crock pot between 30 to 60 minutes before serving. If you are making ramen, 10 to 15 minutes is sufficient to cook the noodles on the high setting.

Some recipes require you put the pasta in at the beginning, with the other ingredients. Crockpot lasagna is one example. You can also make an incredible macaroni and cheese in the crock pot, but do not leave it for eight hours. This is a recipe that will be done somewhere between 90 minutes and 2 hours. You can also make baked ziti, stuffed pasta shells, and other similar dishes. Be sure to watch the time on these dishes. They probably will not take all day to cook, and you do not want to end up with mush instead of pasta.

Pasta does just fine in the crock pot. All you need to do for success is to use the right approach for each recipe. Pasta is more delicate than something like beans, so keep an eye on the cooker until you know how the recipe will work. Sometimes it may take a few times to get it right.

Before you know it, you will be turning out delicious pasta meals for your family using your crock pot. Comfort food never tasted so good, or was so easy to make.

Chicken tortilla soup is delightfully different. Full of flavor and spice, you can cook it on the stove or in the crock pot. The tortillas are like noodles in this dish. They soak up the flavor and fill out the ingredients. Serve with corn bread for a filling meal.

The food of Mexico has a long and varied history. This diverse history is rich with a fusion of influences that has created a cuisine that is enjoyed all over the world. True Mexican cuisine is made of fresh foods that are prepared from scratch. The results are delicious and very good for you.

Mexican cuisine is a blending of Aztec, Spanish, and Mayan influences with a little French thrown in. It has a reputation for spicy foods, but not all of their dishes are known for their heat. Recipes will depend on what part of Mexico it comes from. Ingredients and tastes change.

In 1521, when Cortez arrived in Mexico from Spain, he and his fellow explorers found many foods they had never seen before. Peanuts, chocolate, squash, beans, vanilla, avocados, corn, tomatoes, and coconuts were all new flavors that flooded their taste buds. In turn, the Spanish introduced many foods into Mexico like pork, beef, lamb, cheese, garlic, citrus, vinegar, wine, and milk. The native Mexicans quickly assimilated these foods into their cuisine, blending them with their staples easily.

Every cuisine can trace back to a foundation of a few ingredients. Mexican cuisine is based on beans, squash, and corn. Each region added their own local products to this foundation. In the Yucatan, seafood and fresh fruit-based sauces were the focus. Northern Mexico has a lot of charcoal grilled meats on the menu. Around Oaxaca, corn was first domesticated by man. They still grow many varieties there that are unavailable anywhere else in the world. They also grow a lot of chilies and are known to have at least seven different mole sauces in this area.

Veracruz and its surroundings have most recipes built on fish. Tacos, tamales and everything else is made with the abundance of fresh fish to be found in this area. Other common ingredients on the menu in this region include tomatoes, chilies, and olives. True Mexican food is nothing like what you may experience in the United States.

The Mexican food we eat in the United States tends to be more Tex-Mex than Mexican. In Mexico, rice and beans would rarely be served together in the same meal, let alone the same course. Here, we get both on the same plate at most Mexican restaurants. Mexicans hardly ever make salads, either. This is the influence of the United States that has added these dishes.

You can easily find traditional Mexican recipes in books or online, but do not expect them to be like what you eat at Mexican restaurants. Authentic Mexican cuisine is a delicious tradition you should try. Maybe you can try some of the regional recipes that use fresh ingredients like seafood or fruit. They are really amazing.

Sitting down to a Mexican meal does not necessarily mean tacos and enchiladas, but this certainly is a wonderful way to enjoy it. The real cuisine of Mexico is rich and full of flavor. Enjoy some at your own table and see all it has to offer. You will be very surprised.

Traditional Mexican ingredients which feature in many different Mexican recipes, such as corn, tomatoes, avocado, chicken and cheese, also make an appearance in a lot of Mexican salads. If the weather is warm, making your own Mexican salads can be a nice way to enjoy another facet of typical Mexican cuisine.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Slow Cooker History

Crock-pots are in almost every kitchen. They sit on the counter or hidden away in a cupboard, collecting dust unless we are really strapped for time. In actuality, slow cooking has been used to prepare meals for hundreds of years. Today is so much easier; it is amazing this method is not used more often.

Way Back When

People have been slow cooking their meals ever since they learned how to smelt iron and make a pot. A large kettle could be simmering over the fire throughout the day, or a small, covered Dutch oven could be set into the coals for cooking. It has long been known that slow cooking has many benefits for our food. The downside to the old methods is the constant tending needed for the fire, as well as frequent stirring of the food.

Cooking on a low heat for many hours tenderizes tough meats through the softening of the fibers. The natural collagen also melts, creating a tender, delicious meal that is full of gelatin and nutrition. Long cooking times may also be beneficial to tough root crops, rendering them more digestible. Dried beans and lentils also benefit from a long cooking time on low heat.

The Crock Pot

In the’50s, Naxon Utilities Corporation of Chicago created the first slow cooker. It was called the Beanery All Purpose Cooker, and it was designed to help people cook baked beans. It was basically a ceramic pot that fit inside a metal pan with heating elements around the inside. This kept the heat even all around the food, but kept it out of direct contact.

Naxon was bought by Rival in’70. The Beanery was reinvented as the Crock Pot. During the’70s, more women were joining the workforce, and the Crock Pot helped them manage to feed their families as well. It was easy enough to fill it before they left for work and be able to come home to a hot meal.

As the years have progressed, so has the Crock Pot. Now they feature removable ceramic pots for easier cleaning and storage of leftovers. The old ones were a single piece, making cleaning difficult due to the attached electrical cord. The new ceramic liners are even dishwasher safe, making them even more convenient for busy families. Many of the newer slow cookers also feature a warming setting as well as Low and High. Some are electronic and will automatically switch to warm when the food is done.

In the old days, women used slow cooking to make many different foods. Today, crock-pots are even more convenient. You can make roasts, stews, beans and all sorts of tasty meals in your slow cooker, even some more complicated dishes including lasagna, pulled pork, and seafood chowders. You can even cook homemade chicken noodle soup in a crock pot very easily. Almost anything can be made in a crock-pot.

You can also emulate your ancestors and bake breads by slow cooking. The more you use your crock-pot, the more creative you will get. You may even try desserts and dips if you get adventurous.

What Is Cholesterol And How Does It Affect You?

Not all cholesterol is bad. In fact, cholesterol in general isn’t bad. Cholesterol is manufactured by our bodies to help keep us healthy. Our bodies produce some of it while the food we eat provides the rest.

Heart disease, heart attacks and strokes are often associated with cholesterol; however, there is good and bad cholesterol. If the levels aren’t within the norms, the above results often happen.

As stated before, cholesterol is completely normal. It is used to produce cells and hormones. Since cholesterol is a somewhat waxy, soft substance found in your bloodstream, if there is too much present, it puts you at higher risk for some illnesses.

Cholesterol is created by the body and consumed through food. Food is responsible for about 25% of the cholesterol in the body. The cells and liver create the rest.

The cholesterol that increases your risk of heart attack or stroke is known as LDL. This cholesterol has a tendency to clog arteries when there is too much of it.

The bad cholesterol is manufactured by your body. There is a chance of inheriting genes that cause your body to produce much LDL. If you eat foods that contain saturated fats, or trans fats, your cholesterol level will increase. Having a family history of high cholesterol may not help to keep the levels low enough even if you make changes to your lifestyle.

Your blood cannot absorb cholesterol. Lipoproteins carry cholesterol to and from cells. These lipoproteins are known as low-density lipoprotein, or LDL the bad cholesterol. The good cholesterol or lipoproteins are called high-density lipoprotein, or HDL. These types of lipids in conjunction with cholesterol and triglycerides are what your cholesterol count is made of.

If there is too much bad cholesterol in your blood it eventually starts to build up in your arteries. When this combines with other substances, plaque forms making the arteries become less flexible.

Good cholesterol, or HDL, is thought to protect your heart from heart attacks. If these levels are too low, your risk for a heart attack increases.

Many people hold to common beliefs in regards to cholesterol.

The intestines and liver control LDL levels. Diet and exercise will help but will not completely lower the levels to normal range.

Using margarine instead of butter is not going to lower cholesterol. Both of these are high in certain kinds of fat. Since trans and saturated fats determine what your cholesterol levels are do not over use food high in these fats. Just changing to margarine is not going to help.

Regardless of your weight or size, anyone can have high cholesterol.

If you feel that you need your cholesterol checked, talk to your doctor. They may not suggest it right away but your health is in your hands. Ask to be tested.

No cholesterol foods doesn’t mean that the food is a healthy choice. Make sure to read the label. Many foods that state they are low cholesterol foods actually contain large quantities of saturated or Trans fats.

Taking medicine for high cholesterol without watching what you eat is not enough either.

If you are going to eat eggs, keep in mind that they are good for you as long as take into consideration the cholesterol that you consume from other food as well.

Men are the only ones who suffer from high cholesterol. The hormone, estrogen, causes your cholesterol levels to rise. High cholesterol in women who are going through menopause is common. Cholesterol levels normally rise with age.

Don’t wait until you are middle aged before having your cholesterol levels checked. As a matter of fact, having it checked regularly in your early twenties is a good idea.
