Prevent Colds and Flu with Five Self Care Tips

Susan Wallace | January 27, 2010

Even though the Fall’s cold and flu season has passed, school has started up again and this brings about the need to change how we prepare our self care activities to preserve and enhance our energy for the coming months.

To prepare for the cold and flu season, the Fall is the optimum time to build up the immune system. In traditional Chinese medicine the Fall is the time of harvesting, saving and storing what the abundant summer has produced. This principal applies to the human condition in that we have built strength and muscle and vitamin D stores to serve us through the less active winter months.

5 Means for Self Care

Consider all the activities you can do to promote your health during the Fall season:

1. strengthen your body’s immune system by seeing an acupuncturist

2. make sure you’re taking the right mix and dosage of vitamins

3. eat nutritious food at regular times throughout your day

4. exercising to strengthen the body and reduce stress

5. often overlooked, getting enough rest will generate more energy and mental focus

Since colds and flu’s are just beginning to be circulated, these activities all enhance your immune systems and make you less susceptible from the outset. In my practice I’ve found that my clients start reporting colds about 1-3 weeks after school opens.

To prevent colds and flu, I use two different kinds of formulas. The first compound is a Chinese traditional formula, called “Jade Wind-Screen” and is used for strengthening the immune system. It is very effective and has been in use for thousands of years. This will help protect you from catching colds. This formula should be started in late summer/fall and be taken for two to three months.

The second formula I use I call “Prevent a Cold” and it is based on Yin Qiao Formula. It is used at the first signs of a cold such as sore throat, runny nose, slight fever or chills and body aches. This formula can stop a cold from progressing into the lungs. It is taken 3-4 times per day for several days to chase the cold away. If you wake in the early morning with a scratchy throat or runny nose start taking the herbs and monitor symptoms throughout the day while continuing to take the formula. If the symptoms go away stop the formula but be ready to start the formula again at the first signs of a cold coming back. You can do this for several days but if symptoms do progress to a full blown cold then a more individualized formula will be necessary. Whenever you take herbs pay attention to how it effects your digestion. If you have any digestive upset should discontinue the formula.

In considering the H1N1 influenza virus that has been reported in the news the most important first step is being as healthy as you can. Using the Jade Wind-Screen formula will help this as well as getting proper rest and nutrition. If you think you have come down with the flu you should also call your doctor.

Super Supplement for Cold and Flu Prevention

Susan Wallace | January 21, 2010

Simply stated: Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins to use in the prevention of colds and flu.

The H1NI flu vaccine has been in the news and you have concerns about whether or not to immunize your family. You will have to make that decision according to the best available information.

If I have not talked to you personally about Vitamin D and you have not been tested for Vitamin D levels then I want to tell you why it is one of the most important vitamins in the prevention of colds and flu.

Vitamin D has been called the “sunshine vitamin” because it is made in the body only when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Many people do not get nearly enough sun exposure and if they do they have covered the skin with sun block or clothing which prevents Vitamin D from forming. We have always known that Vitamin D is the escort of Calcium into the bones but in the last decade many more uses for Vitamin D have been discovered.

Vitamin D can prevent colds and flu by helping to maintain a healthy immune system. If you think about when we are getting colds and flu and it’s during the darkest months of the year. Since the 1940′s milk has been fortified with Vitamin D which was the first vitamin to be manufactured in a lab and added to our food supply. Vitamin D2 was formulated at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and it was very cheep to produce. The problem with D2 is it does not convert well to activated Vitamin D in the body and at high doses it can be toxic. The RDA recommended daily allowance was set at 400IUs which turns out to be extremely low. Now we are finding that due to our lack of Vitamin D and the inferior quality of the fortified foods, Vitamin D deficiency is at epidemic proportions.

Three simple ways to guarantee you get enough Vitamin D

1. First of all get your blood tested for Vitamin D. I can order an inexpensive test for you. Ask me about this at your next appointment or e-mail me.

2. Select the right foods. Foods that contain Vitamin D, are the foods with fat. Low fat foods will not provide Vitamin D. The food highest in Vitamin D is Cod Liver Oil. Other sources are deep water fatty fish like salmon, oysters, organ meats, egg yolk and butter. Fortified foods include dairy products and cereal grains but the amounts added can be erratic and if the form is Vitamin D2 it is not easily assimilated in the body. Also these fortified products need to be eaten with fat so nonfat milk is not going to help Vitamin D levels.

3. Use a supplement to get sufficient levels of Vitamin D. Like I mentioned first get your blood tested so I can help you determine your level of deficiency. Then I can help you supplement accordingly.

In order to get enough Vitamin A, the easiest way to do this is by consuming fresh fruits and vegetables. Cod Liver Oil is also a source of Vitamin A. It is important to not to get too much vitamin A in supplement form as it can be toxic so eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies is the safest way to get Vitamin A in your diet.

In addition to consuming more Vitamin A and D think about what daily habits may be contributing factors in compromising your resistance to colds and flu:

* Do you get enough rest or are you trying to get by on 6 hours of sleep or less? * Are you eating regularly or are you snacking throughout the day? * Is your digestion working properly? * Do you get regular exercise each week?

All the factors listed above are very easy to initiate but they do take a personal plan and some effort on your part to take the best care of yourself. I can help you by designing a personal program to enhance your immune system to help you deal with the cold and flu season. Give me a call to discuss this with me during your next appointment or phone consultation.

Finding A Natural Flu Treatment And A Natural Recovery

Barbie Kolicki | January 20, 2010

Natural flu treatment has become a preferred method of winter illness survival. When you are vaccinated, you are injecting the body with a strain of the flu virus to help build a natural antibody. Unfortunately, not everyone responds very well to this, and therefore we need a holistic and natural flu remedy to help get us through the illness.

The absolute most simple of flu treatment options is to drink ample fluids (especially water) and to give your body the rest it requires. Water is essential for hydration. It is easy to become dehydrated when you are struck with the flu. Dehydration can end up being a serious complication that you need to deal with. Prevention is worth much more than pounds upon pounds of cure.

If you have a lot of congestion and phlegm in your chest, water will help thin out the mucus so that you can cough it up more easily. You can still drink hot teas and whatever else you like to drink when you are under the weather, but water is important as well.

Sleep is the best poor man’s drug there is and it is still one of the most effective treatment options available. When your body sleeps and rests, the energy it needs to heal itself is readily available. When you are fighting the flu and you continue to push through it, the body doesn’t have the same resources to draw from and healing is significantly slowed. Adults seem to have a more difficult time with the idea of resting than children, probably because we are always pushing ourselves when we are tired or are not feeling at our best. Rest is the most healing thing you can do for your body.

Supplements to help fight off the flu are a good idea. One of the most popular natural supplements for reducing the length of the flu is elderberry. This is a natural extract that is very high in the essential vitamins A, B, and C as well as very high in antioxidants.

There are many natural remedies for the flu that can be found in a Chinese market. If you go to the market and find a apothecary, you need to tell them your symptoms and they will be able to find something to combat your ailments. Whether it is guaranteed to work is often debated. However, all the ingredients are natural so there is very little chance of any harm being done.

A natural flu treatment that works well for you might take a little digging. The important treatment tool is learning how to listen to your body. Rest, fluid, and immune boosting foods and supplements can help you get through the flu without as much down time or discomfort as those who rely on traditional medicine.

Are you looking for flu treatment? It’s definitely flu season and there are a lot of ways to get flu relief. This includes both natural and over the counter medications. Get better this flu season!

What Are Some Herbal Remedies For The Flu

Andrew Vargas | January 11, 2010

We all know the symptoms; sore or scratchy throat, aches, chills, stuffy nose, cough, fatigue and headache..they all point to the flu. Sometimes you can develop a fever and nausea/vomiting as well. It is a difficult time for the sufferer and the caretaker. Did you know there are many flu herbal remedies available? All those over the counter so-called flu medications sure can get expensive and quite frankly, they never really worked that well on me and my family.

A few years ago I began researching more natural ways to deal with flu symptoms. I was thrilled to find that there really are cost effective flu herbal remedies that can quickly alleviate the discomfort of the flu. I’m not saying these remedies will cure you, but they will lessen the severity of the symptoms and the length of time you will feel lousy.

One of the first signs of the flu can typically be a cough. At the fist sign of a cough, place one dropper full of Echinacea (alcohol-free, of course) in your mouth for five to ten minutes. You can repeat this every hour for three to four hours. If you have congestion, put five drops of Eucalyptus oil in a hot bath or, if you don’t feel like or are incapable of getting into the bath tub, just pour six drops of the Eucalyptus oil in a cup of boiling water, then put a towel over your head and inhale the vapors.

Cayenne, also known as capsicum, will keep the mucus flowing which will help with congestion and also headaches. Yes, this is the same cayenne we use in cooking and it can also be used in flu herbal remedies. Cayenne can be bought and taken in capsule form or you can add it to soups or other foods. However, eating food may not be something you feel like doing while suffering from the flu, so I suggest adding the cayenne to your soup or broth.

Extract of Elderberry contains antiviral properties. For this reason, it can actually reduce the flu symptoms. An easy way to use Elderberry in flu herbal remedies is to make a tea, simply simmer 1 tablespoon of dried berries in two cups of hot water for 15 minutes. You should have this tea three times a day to be effective. Alternatively, you can use elderberry in tincture or capsule form.

Tea is very soothing during times of illness or stress so it is one of my preferred flu herbal remedies. Making a basic tea for the flu is easy. The following blend will soothe the symptoms of flu as well as a cold by fighting viruses and bacteria. This mixture can be made and stored away from heat and light in an airtight container for up to one year. Mix: cup dried peppermint leaves cup dried lemon balm leaves cup dried elder flowers cup dried yarrow flowers

To brew tea: Bring 1 cup water to a boil and remove from heat. Add 1-2 teaspoons of the tea blend and teaspoon freshly grated ginger. Steep for 5 to 10 minutes, strain and add honey and/or lemon juice if desired. It is no fun to get the flu, but I hope this article has shown you the flu herbal remedies can be an effective alternative to the traditional over-the-counter medicines. Being prepared by having the suggested herbs in your home and available to use when needed is a good idea because when you are not feeling well, you definitely will not want to go to the store to buy anything. Be prepared and have them readily available.

If you need have the flu and nothing is working flu remedies will definitely help you with all of your alternative medicine needs

Realizing A Pandemic Solution With The New Silver Solution

Mike Donnelly | January 2, 2010

In our world at this time Achieving A Pandemic Solution easily is one of the uppermost thoughts on our minds. Learning about Silver Sol, and the exciting benefits obtained from silver has given pause to to these concerns.

Silver, in many numerous shapes, has been utilized all through the ages to assist mankind to get through numerous health dilemmas. Diverse cultures placed a silver dust into a baby’s first bath as a method of protection against the world’s dilemmas. A silver pail was put to use by farmers to accumulate milk, thus stopping the milk from spoiling for longer lengths of time with no cooling.

Also, our early pioneers would frequently fling silver coins into their reservoir or water vats to eradicate germs and keep the water palatable. Throughout the plagues in Europe, affluent households gave their babies silver spoons to suckle, thus the adage,” born with a silver spoon in his mouth”.

Several tests at large educational institutions and marketing research laboratories such as Kansas State, UC Davis, Brigham Young University have proven the effectiveness of the product. Because of tests such as these, Finding A Pandemic Solution With Silver Sol may be in the near future.

The Safety of The New Silver Solution

One safety test on The New Silver Solution was supervised by NAMSA, an international therapeutic testing lab, utilizing 22 ppm concentration of The New Silver Solution. The study gauged this elixir for oral toxicity by the standards of the Federal Hazardous Substance Act (FHSA) regulations, 16CPR 1500. The research laboratory administered a single dose of 5 grams for each kilogram of body weight to the test animals. This equates to a 200 pound man or woman consuming four 8-ounce containers of 10 ppm of The New Silver Solution all at once, (100-200 times the standard dose). The test animals were subsequently studied for two weeks for symptoms of toxicity. The report came to the conclusion that: “Under the conditions of the study”, there was no death or major indication of toxicity seen in the rats. The test article (The New Silver Solution(tm)) would not be regarded as poisonous at a dose of 5 g/kg by the oral route in the rat.”

Does The New Silver Solution Harm The Helpful Bacteria in Our Intestines?

This is a meaningful point at issue because frequently antibiotics do eliminate friendly bacteria that dwell in our large intestines. These bacteria not only create B vitamins and folic acid for you, in addition they challenge pathogenic bacteria and yeasts and block them from reproducing and leading to infection. Wonder drugs, chiefly broad-spectrum antibiotics, destroy a broad range of these friendly bacteria. This allows you to be susceptible to “super” infections. Moreover, antibiotics can suppress our immune systems. This is another reason that Realizing A Pandemic SolutionWith The New Silver Solution is so essential.

The New Silver Solution does not put forth such a difficulty. Impartial studies both at Brigham Young University and Viridis Biopharma have fully publicized this.

The actuality that so many people have used The New Silver Solution for a long period of time and have revealed no damaging gastrointestinal side affects, clearly infers that this elixir does not result in these friendly bacteria in any way to harm our bodies. In vitro testing of the silver on a multitude of friendly fauna, such as lactobacillus, shows that the silver does not destroy these beneficial bacteria. Realizing A Pandemic SolutionWith The New Silver Solution is almost in sight.

The author understands the importance of doing things the ethical way. By obtaining A Pandemic Solution using Silver Sol, and helping people eliminate the deadly Flu Viruses can only be a good thing. So, by the significant research that was done, The Silver Solution has been determined to be a miraculous product, and one that should be used every day.

Useful Natural Flu Remedies With Effective Results

Barbie Kolicki | December 23, 2009

When discovering the best natural flu remedies you will understand that there are two approaches – there are methods that concern how the virus can spread and others that concern how to treat an individual that is down with flu.

Most people are aware that the flu is more widespread in winter. This is because we spend a lot more time indoors in closer contact with each other and also as the cold temperature causes the immune system to be under more stress. There are no actual cures for the flu, the best approaches will be able to shorten the recovery time and bring some relief.

The following eight remedies and methods should be put in to use to try to stay healthy through the winter-

1. Blow your nose: Due to the cold temperature in winter months the nose will produce more mucus. This should be blown out as opposed to sucked in. Do not blow your nose too hard as you may damage your ear drums. It is important to clean your hands after blowing.

2. Rest: If you take rest as soon as come down with flu your body has more energy to direct towards the immune system. Try to stay indoors and take time off work or school.

3. Gargle: Having a sore throat is often a symptom of the flu. It can bring a little relief to gargle with warm salty water a few times a day. The throat can also be soothed by drinking a glass of hot water mixed with honey.

4. Hot Shower: A hot steamy shower has the same benefits as a sauna. The warm moist air massages the nasal passages and relaxes all your muscles. If you have a bathtub then a long hot soak can have a great effect.

5. Balm: A useful way to clear breathing passages and get an immediate response is to use a balm or a salve. These usually contain menthol, camphor, or eucalyptus. When applied to the nasal area they can also provide a numbing sensation.

6. Supplements and Herbs: If you frequent health stores then you can pick up certain herbs and supplements that are known to boost the immune system. Colloidal silver, garlic, and astragalus are popular choices.

7. Vitamin C: Today it is common to find that people do not take the right amount of Vitamin C as required on a daily basis. By simply drinking a pint of orange juice the body will have a much stronger metabolism.

8. Support your head: When going to bed try to sleep with your head raised as this will allow any fluid to drain out of your nasal passages easier.

Uncomplicated And Powerful Tips For Avoiding The Swine (H1N1) Flu

Marcus Prellie | December 2, 2009

A common concern people have every winter is the flu. The H1N1 strain, which is commonly referred to as the swine flu, is completely different though. This form of the flu is one that is different from standard flu strains. It can even be deadly to children. To avoid the H1N1 swine flu you should use a couple of avoid swine (H1N1) flu tips.

First you should avoid touching certain parts of your face. Your mouth, nose and eyes are parts that have germs that can be easily transmitted. Any germs you collect from other people can get into these areas with ease. In order to stay healthy you should avoid touching any of these areas.

When you sneeze or cough you can get germs to enter your body. These germs and other viruses can enter during the coughing or sneezing process. You could even catch H1N1 germs. In these cases you should cover your face when doing one of these things. You should also wash your hands afterwards if they covered your mouth.

Hand washing is vital for your health. Without hand washing germs can build up on your skin with ease. To avoid the H1N1 swine flu you should wash your hands thoroughly and often. This will help to keep these germs away.

Of course you may not always have access to a place where you can wash your hands. You should always bring some sanitizing materials with you wherever you go. These items include hand sanitizers and disinfecting sprays. These can be useful because you can easily come in contact with things that are infected with germs. These common things include door handles, public transportation poles and shopping carts. Germs that people have can easily stick onto one of these materials.

If you know anyone who has flu symptoms you should not contact them. Also, if you have symptoms of the flu you should avoid contacting people. Symptoms of the H1N1 flu include a fever, runny nose, sore throat and diarrhea. These are H1N1 symptoms that are similar to what can be found in other flu strains. To stay safe you should avoid getting near people with these symptoms or if you have them.

The H1N1 swine flu is a dangerous condition. It can move around with ease and feel like other types of the flu. By using some helpful process to avoid the H1N1 swine flu you should use preventative measures.

Boost Your Immune System With These Simple Steps

David Bigelow | November 23, 2009

Many of us are looking for ways to stay healthy during cold and flu season. Following these tips to boost immune system can help.

Sometimes all it may take is something as simple as sleep. Getting the recommend 8 hours of sleep each night can give you immune system a little extra boost because it helps to reset you body and gives you more energy to fight off illness. With busy schedules this may seem almost impossible but if you want to stay healthy this is probably one of the easiest ways to do it.

Food gives your body energy as well. The nutrition you get from that food also helps to fight disease. One of the biggest problems is that fast food and junk food don’t provide proper nutrition. Also for all of you who like to diet you may not be getting enough nutrition to fight off illness. You should eat three meals a day and at least 2 of those should be good meals that won’t leave you feeling hungry and that have enough nutrition to give your immune system enough power to keep you body well.

If you simply can’t get enough nutrition from your meals or even if you can, extra vitamins during this time of year are a great idea. They have good multi vitamins you can take plus drinks like V8 juice. Even with all of this vitamin C is very important. You can get vitamin C through fruit juices and most citrus fruit or you can buy pills. During cold and flu season I try to drink more juice and still take a vitamin C pill at least once a day.

Shots for pneumonia and certain strains of flu will help boost your defenses some what against the flu and pneumonia. These are available at your doctor’s office. Some people can’t take these and I would suggest consulting your doctor before doing so. I prefer to not take these even though I work in health care. I have seen cases where people get sick right after taking these and I would prefer to just go it on my own. Doctors do usually recommend these though.

There are new products out that promise to boost your immune system. I know people who swear by these but I have not actually tried them myself. You could be wasting your money or you could get that little extra something that will help to keep you well during the cold and flu season. I suggest reading the labels and making sure they don’t contain anything you shouldn”t be taking or consulting your doctor.

Proper hand washing is always a good idea and can help to keep you healthy also. It’s a good idea to carry some hand sanitizer with you in case you can’t wash your hands for some reason. You especially want to wash your hand after going to the bath room and before eating. Hand washing and sanitizing is also good when you are in public places and touching doors or any other item that may have been touched by someone carrying germs. I have even seen cashiers go as far as wearing disposable gloves to check people out.

Use these tip to stay healthy no matter what time of the year. A healthy life style is the best way to keep your body healthy.

Many people also use herbal remedies to effectively boost your immune system.

Home Treatment of the Flu

Sterling Trump |

The flu and the common cold are the reason for most unnecessary visits to the physicians office than any other type of sickness. With Swine Flu on the rise these visits have increased. Since the cold and flu are caused by viruses they can be almost always treated at home. There are lots of over the counter drugs that will help ease the pain while your body recovers.

When the body is ridding itself of the cold or flu virus a runny nose is normally what occurs. The body uses sneezing as a way to expel germs and irritants from the body. Unfortunately, this also causes the spread of the virus if others come into direct contact with the microscopic particles that carry the virus. It is very important to sneezing into a tissue or cloth of some sort to avoid spreading the virus. Viruses such as the common cold and flu are spread through direct contact some hand washing is very important to keep from spreading the virus to others.

Excess mucous due to a runny nose is generally a symptom of the common cold or flu along with sore throat and coughing. Mucous that drips back into the throat can cause ear infections and additional pain. It can also lead to other infections and sinus pain.

A runny nose can also be a sign of allergies like hay fever which can cause clear thin mucous. Hay fever will often have other symptoms such as: sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. Hay fever normally lasts longer than a viral infection, sometimes for weeks even months. Allergies are more common in the Spring or Fall when pollen and other allergens are in the air. Other substances that cause hay fever are: dust, mold, and animal dander.

You can relieve the pain and fever associated with the common cold and flu by using medications such as: acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen which all can be purchased over the counter. These medication should be taken regularly in the evening as symptoms due to viral infections tend to worsen late afternoon and evenings. Other alternatives are to open the nasal passages and reduce nasal secretions with the use of decongestants and antihistamines.

Drink lots of fluids this helps to keep the mucous more liquid and to prevent complications such as bronchitis and ear infection. Vaporizers help particularly well in the winter and can assist with blowing out mucous through your nose for additional relief by moving virus particles, and allergens out of the body. Try not to sniff a runny nose because this might cause an ear infection. If the symptoms last longer than two weeks call a doctor.

Swine Flu and Flights to Mexico Advice

Adriana Noton | November 20, 2009

Due to the spread of Swine Flu / H1N1 across the globe, governments have stepped up and offered recommendations regarding travel to Mexico, as well as offering safety measures that travelers may want to implement before embarking on their trip. Governments are now recommending that people should avoid, unless necessary, traveling to Mexico. However, it still remains a personal health decision.

The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has noted that healthy people can make their usual travel plans to Mexico, but take the necessary precautions to stay healthy when traveling. When considering traveling to Mexico, one should talk to their physician about what precautions should be taken before traveling, such as immunization. People should also learn about any instances of swine flu in the area they are planning to travel and what to do if they develop symptoms. Find out about available health care options at the destination. If you are a high risk of complications due to the virus, you should consider postponing travel to Mexico. People should also learn where the hospitals and local doctors are located before traveling. It is critical to have the appropriate health insurance that will provide coverage in the event that you fall ill while in Mexico. If necessary, you should purchase additional insurance. It is very important that people refrain from traveling when they are ill. Avoid travel for at least 24 hours after fever or fever-like symptoms have disappeared.

Most cases of swine flu in Mexico have been reported in Mexico City, but the virus has also been detected in the states of Mexicali, Oaxaca, Baja California, and San Luis Potosi. The Mexican Secretariat of Health has advised people to avoid kissing people as a greeting, shaking hands, big crowds, or taking the subway. Their recommendations also suggest that keeping a distance of at least six feet from other people and frequent hand washing may reduce the threat of exposure.

Many flights are changing their flight schedules to certain places in Mexico. For most airlines, travelers may rebook their Mexico City flights without incurring change fees within a specific time period from when the flight was booked. It is important to check with the specific airline about when these time periods expired. For instance, WestJet and WestJet Vacations are working to repatriate travelers in Mexico and putting aside flight changes and cancellation fees for people with early bookings, permitting them to return to Mexico once regular flight service begins again. Air Canada will continue its flights to Mexico City, but will suspend services to Cozumel, Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta, until June 1.

Travelers to an area of Mexico affected by swine flu should ensure they have access to sufficient healthcare and insurance before traveling. They should be aware of the flu-like symptoms associated with swine flu and see a doctor immediately if they show these symptoms. If during the seven days after you return from Mexico you develop a fever, headache, muscle pain, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches, contact your physician or go to the hospital and tell them where you traveled. When planning to travel to Mexico, check for any swine flu travel updates on your Government’s website.
