A Good Funeral Director Can Be Of Immense Help In Your Moment Of Grief

Helen Esteban | November 30, 2009

Funeral directors offer a great source of support and compassion to a family that is reeling under the sorrow of the recent death of a loved one. They manage the entire planning and implementation of the proceedings, allowing family members some much required time and space to mentally accept the sad event and grieve with their friends and relatives.

The funeral director needs to take responsibility for many jobs in the funeral procedures beginning with transporting the body from the morgue or the house of the departed to the burial site. Formalities and all the documentation involved like acquiring a death certificate, approvals for holding the funeral, organ donation process if any, and much more will need to be overseen by the funeral director.

A good funeral director should be the single point contact for all external vendors starting from florists, musicians, catering services etc. He is the one responsible to take out obituary and funeral notices in newspapers and get in touch with family members, friends and well-wishers of the deceased to attend the funeral service.

In discussion with the kith and kin of the deceased, the funeral director determines the venue, date and time of funeral service ceremonies like memorial service and burial. The visitation ceremony where the family members of the deceased are consoled by relatives and friends is also organised by him to a big extent. On the funeral day, his job finishes only after he oversees all ceremonies until the grave is finally sealed.

In order to manage these functions towards successful conducting of the funeral ceremony, the funeral director should have important characteristics of compassion and a service driven attitude. You should therefore ensure that the funeral director you wish to employ has appropriate licenses and enough experience. He should have a proven track record for credible and good work so that he can do all the important functions without you having to worry about it.

What An Undertaker Does In A Funeral Service

Gadiv Alvarez | November 19, 2009

Undertakers, who are also known as funeral directors, are people who are next in importance to the family of the deceased and the clergy when it comes to funeral services. These people manage the arrangements of the funeral, straight from the start till the end. Undertakers have to stay prepared to work any hour of the day and any day of the year without a lapse, as they have an emergency duty.

In the face of such a great loss, the mourning family may not be able to take quick decisions about the service and ultimate disposition of the body. This is precisely where the undertaker enters the scene and takes over. His responsibilities include deciding the specific time, venue, and manner in which the funeral service will be conducted. Moreover, the undertaker helps you in coming to terms with your loss, as he stays by your side and organises the whole funeral, enabling you to reflect upon your profound love and respect for the deceased person.

Planning a funeral service begins with deciding upon its time, venue and date and then communicating the same to family and friends. Once this is finalised, the undertaker assists you in getting the deceased to the funeral site or to the venue where he or she is to be finally rested. In case the body is to be buried, the undertaker helps in choosing the appropriate casket for the deceased.

Moreover, the undertaker also helps in organising the funeral service, including choosing florists, flowers, church, making arrangements for for transport, food, clergy, music, copies of script of hymns, headstone and ashes. The wish of the family is always taken into account in all these things so that the deceased receives a funeral service in a manner he or she would have desired.

Finally, some undertakers even help you in bringing the dead from other places, embalming the body and can also help in carrying out the funeral service in a foreign country, depending on your need.

How To Go About Preparation Of A Funeral Service

Carlo Silva |

Death is one of the harsh realities of our existence that we are least prepared for. Paying respects to the dead is an age old tradition that has gradually changed to fit the times. A conventional funeral service used to be held in church, with specific hymns, recitals and a eulogy for the deceased. But, this practice is changing today, with a lot of people wishing to go for a more personal funeral service for their near and dear one.

Organising a funeral service, right after the death of a near and dear one can be a very traumatic and painful experience. The basic myths regarding funeral services include that this is a legal requirement, which it most certainly isn’t. Secondly, many people think that a service has to be conducted in a church, which is again untrue. It is crucial to realize that traditionally, such services were conducted in church but nowadays, with significance being attached to a personal touch, funeral services are being increasingly held in homes. Thirdly, such services do not mandate the presence of either the clergy or the casket and can be easily held without either.

With the increase in choice for personal funeral services, it is important to keep the dead person in mind while planning for it. The choice of music must be from among the personal choices of the dead, though it is preferable to have soothing music. You can either hire a live music band or choose to go with music records.

There is also a growing trend of displaying the personal things of the departed to show his or her personality to the entire world. Address is extremely crucial in all funeral services inclusive of the personal ones. It could be a recital, a song or a personal speech that aptly describes the dead person.

Finally, it is advisable to present the people assembled for the funeral with some souvenirs that help them keep the memories of the deceased alive for years.

Traditions And Customs Followed In A Buddhist Funeral

Bariel Tan | November 18, 2009

A Buddhist funeral consists of elaborate last rites carried out according to sacred customs and traditions. The funeral service, according to Buddhism, signifies the setting free of the deceased person’s soul, which was trapped in the futility of existence, and its quest for a new life thereafter.

In a typical Buddhist funeral, the deceased’s body is cremated and monks in the presence of family members carry out the last rites. The dormant positive energies are freed from the soul by the chanting of the correct sutras by Buddhist monks who read from the holy scriptures. To prevent any decomposition in case of delayed cremation, the deceased’s body is prepared carefully while the religious chanting is being performed. After washing the body, it is placed in a casket with candles, bouquets, fragrant incense and a picture of the deceased person.

If the funeral is deferred by some days for distant relatives to bid their final goodbyes, the monks visit the dead person’s home daily and chant sutras from the Abhidharma, an important Buddhist holy scripture.

On the day of the funeral, monks perform the final rituals and their chief delivers a short speech in tribute to the deceased person focusing on his contributions in life and consoling the aggrieved family that death is destiny. Other rituals like wrapping a white cloth around the coffin during the religious incantation and Pansakula, a custom of passing on blessings and virtues to the departed soul are also performed.

Before the cremation takes place, a close family member is requested to say a few words about the departed individual. Following the cremation, a special meal is arranged for the people gathered at the funeral.

A great number of people in Thailand, Tibet, China and some other Asian countries with a large Buddhist population follow the Buddhist funeral system with some variations based on the local customs.

Choose A Casket Cautiously To Bid Your Loved One A Heartfelt Adieu

Cathy Reyes |

The death of a family member or a friend can cause untold distress and pain and leave an irreplaceable gap which cannot be filled by any one else in the world. But it is important to overcome that pain and make arrangements for the funeral proceedings for which an appropriate casket is critical.

Identifying and getting the ideal casket at a time when you are not in a sound mental state to deal with the intricacies can be a difficult task. When the departed’s religious or social beliefs has certain requirements for the casket or the deceased himself has made his tastes known in this respect, then the selection of a casket becomes much easier.

Many casket choices come in a range of sizes, styles, shapes, and accordingly differing rate tags. You will have to identify whether you want a burial casket or a funeral casket. While the funeral casket is meant for the deceased’s body to be visible during the memorial service, the burial casket is typically only appropriate for burial purposes.

Caskets come in a variety of materials such as metal, fibre, wood and marble. Normally wooden ones are preferred by tradition bound families, and they can choose from caskets made of maple, oak, mahogany etc. Wooden caskets are of good quality and look very classy and nice when polished, but these also cost higher than caskets made of other materials. Metal caskets are a good choice with their bronze, stainless steel, or copper finish, and you will have choices of different colours, designs, and patterns.

Caskets made of environment friendly material are also gaining popularity as people are becoming aware of their responsibility towards the environment to protect our planet. As the basic materials used are completely biodegradable, these caskets result in least harm to the planet. These caskets are an excellent choice if the deceased person was sensitive to environment conservation.
