Understanding Periodontal Gum Disease In Its Various Forms

It’s often the case that when we eventually go to the dentist for a checkup — if we go at all — we’re eventually told we have some form of gum disease, usually of the periodontal variety, and that we need to do certain things about it. What to know about periodontal gum disease, then, means understanding how it develops, how it’s treated and how we can, most importantly, prevent its appearance.

This form of gum disease can be mild or it can range all the way up to severe. Mild periodontal disease usually evidences itself as inflammation of the gums and not much else, fortunately. Serious periodontal disease, though — if left untreated — can cause loss of bone and tissue that’s responsible for supporting the teeth. Worse-case issues can mean permanent loss of teeth, which is very bad.

Most commonly, causes of this disease involve plaque buildups in the mouth. When this substance is allowed to accumulate, and isn’t cleaned away through brushing and flossing, the plaque can eventually harden into tartar, which isn’t susceptible to removal just by brushing or flossing. Normally, deep cleaning by a dentist or hygienist will be required. Tartar can also harbor more bacteria, which continues to build in the mouth.

The longer tartar and plaque stay in the mouth, the higher the likelihood that gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) will begin to take place. The usual symptoms of this mild form of the gum disease are swollen and reddened gum tissue that tends to bleed easily whenever flossing or brushing is undertaken. Even light brushing can cause the gums to start bleeding, by the way.

Fortunately, gingivitis doesn’t cause bone or tissue loss or deterioration. When it isn’t treated properly, it can advance to a more severe form of gum disease known as periodontitis (“inflammation around the mouth”). This is a much more serious condition than what is found in gingivitis. Gum tissue begins to pull away from the teeth and the tissue pockets that result become infected.

The body goes into high gear and tries to stave off the infection which, unfortunately, begins to lead to deterioration of the connective tissues and bone that support the teeth. If the condition isn’t addressed in a serious way, that tissue and bone can be lost forever and along with them the teeth. Medical treatments can include prescription medicines and, in serious cases, intricate surgery.

Preventing periodontal gum disease is extremely easy, with regular brushing and flossing being the two main activities. Generally, once daily flossing and twice daily brushing (at the least) will generally ensure that gum disease never appears. Risk factors for it include smoking and usage of tobacco in its various forms. See a dentist regularly and brush and floss and the disease will probably never appear, fortunately.

Visiting your dentist on a regular basis is the most important things that you can do for yourself, if you have kids, you need to make sure that they do the same, to protect from gum disease also known as periodontal disease.

If you don’t really want to exceed three minutes, you can use a timer or play a song that lasts for three minutes. Choosing the right toothbrush would also make your brushing time more enjoyable.

However, as people get older, they tend to disregard the proper way of brushing and just brush their teeth sloppily. If you think that simply brushing your teeth all round and making bubbles is enough to get rid of the plaque and other food debris, think again.
