An Unhealthy Mind And Body Can Lead To A Bad Relationship!

Mike Rollins | January 14, 2010

Having an unhealthy body due to lack of exercise and poor eating habits can affect your life in many ways. It can also affect your love life!

When you start a relationship with someone, you want it to last as long as possible. Establishing a healthy relationship can help you accomplish that. In order to have a strong relationship with somebody, you want to possess a healthy mind and body.

How do you make a relationship healthy? A healthy mind is when you have secure self-esteem and confidence about who you are and what you desire out of life. A healthy mind gives you independence so that you trust in yourself to get things done and do not become co-dependent on your mate.

An unhealthy mind is when you have little or no self-esteem and no self-confidence. The lines of communicating become absent because you recede into your own world and just look to your mate for direction in your life, which puts a burden on your lover.

A healthy body is when you take care of yourself. You make an effort to maintain a healthy weight and you care about your appearance and how you feel on a daily basis. You do not smoke or drink or do anything that would induce damage to your body over time.

You exercise on a regular basis to keep your heart in tip-top condition and eat a sensible diet, splurging now and then as a reinforcement. Your attitude is positive which makes your mate want to spend time with you.

An unhealthy body is when you do not care enough about yourself to take care of your body. You smoke and drink more than you should and let yourself go. You eat junk food frequently and your waist is inflating.

Since you do not care about yourself, you do not try to work out or do things that would keep your heart strong. Your mental attitude is bad, causing your relationship collapse because your partner no longer wants to spend any time with you. You can’t fault him or her because if you can’t even love yourself, why should your partner?

Once your mind and body are in sync with each other, you can acquire a positive attitude, which keeps the line of communication going with your mate. It will allow you to listen to them and assists you in supporting them if they need it. You are more likely to do whatever it takes to keep your relationship in first-rate shape so that it continues to grow and mature.

Stop the pitfalls of an unhealthy mind and avoid poor physical health. Setbacks are a given, but do not let them lead to an unhealthy mind or impact your health for the long-term. Keep your body, mind and healthy and strong.

Eat Up! Here are Five Healthy Foods to Lower Cholesterol

Marie Nolan | December 30, 2009

If you’re at risk for heart disease, low cholesterol foods should be a part of your everyday diet. These wonder foods work by either lowering your current cholesterol, or they help cholesterol from getting too high in the first place.

Your own body produces cholesterol, it is a fatty substance known as a lipid. It is manufactured in your liver but can be over-produced by the overly fatty foods that we all-too-often eat. Keep in mind, though, that cholesterol is actually vital for our bodies to perform properly. However, too much cholesterol is not good and is a common cause of heart disease and can multiply the possibility of strokes.

That being said, what are the best 5 low cholesterol foods which you ought to be eating to maintain heart-healthy cholesterol levels?

Vegetables and Fruits Count

It’s hard to deny the heart-healthy, low fat low cholesterol effects of fruit and vegetables. Vegetables even more so (since they don’t have as much natural sugar as does fruit). It’s very important not to add cream, butter or fatty dressings on them. Yes, the dressings and sauces taste wonderful, but they’re what got you in trouble in the first place!

Go for the Grains

Grains tend to be ignored, which is a shame. They are high in soluble fiber and more often than not low in fat. What are these foods? Think of items like barley, oats, pulses and even fruits, like apples.

Add a Touch of Nuts

Nuts and seeds really should be part of your everday (or at least weekly) diet. But don’t include these otherwise fabulous foods if they are roasted in oil and salt, or smothered in chocolate. But plain nuts and seeds are great. An excellent way of adding these is to throw a handful into your soups, stews, pasta sauces and salads. They give a crunchy quality and are a fabulous way to get your children used to consuming low cholesterol foods.

Fatty Fish are Good!

Fish are the exclusion to the “go lean” rule; in this case, fatty is better! Cold-water fish such as salmon, trout and tuna are all fatty but they are excellent, as is most fish in general. Check that that any canned fish is packed in water, and not oil, and does not have a lot of added salt.

Meat Isn’t the Bad Guy

If you like meat then that’s ok too. Obviously, you do not want to eat fatty meat, but low-fat meat is all right.. Did you know that lean pork without any fat is as low in cholesterol as cottage cheese? You just don’t want to consume fatty pork bacon or ham.

If you are planning to enjoy some red meat, be sure to add a good-sized salad or steamed vegetables (without butter) to your meal. The healthy benefits of salads and vegetables help to negate some of the fat remaining in red meat.

Don’t Undo What You’ve Done

Now that you are more familiar with the kinds of meals you really should be consuming, think about how they are prepared. I’ve already mentioned several “gotchas” such as sardines packed in oil or full-fat salad dressings.

One heart is all you get, and if you’re attempting to help keep it healthy by consuming low cholesterol foods, be sure the foods stay that way! Become used to looking at labels, and ask what is in the dressing (or better yet, avoid it).

Keep your body and heart protected with low cholesterol meals. It will thank you for it!

The Longings of Your Thirsty Soul

Pablo Perez | December 25, 2009

Eternity is written on our hearts. That’s why we like stories like the one below, they remind us that life is more than the things we see…

“Aslan turned to them and said: “You do not look so happy as I mean you to be… the dream is ended: this is the morning” – As He spoke He no longer looked to them like a lion; but the things that began to happen after that were so great and beautiful that I cannot write them… and for us this is the end of all the stories, and we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after. But for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before…” C.S. Lewis – The Last Battle

Truly, we were made for God, designed to love and be loved by Him. The awareness of His person is our inheritance. We were born to be fascinated by Him and allured by His Love. You may know it or not, but the presence of God is the environment you were created for.

Yet… most of us live disconnected from this heavenly atmosphere. We go through life ignoring that, we’re “incarnate thirst” as someone said. Our journey is filled with struggle and pain, our minds often overheat with the cares of this life, and our emotions… well… picture a roller coaster and get a preview…

As if this weren’t enough, every single day we face an ocean of distractions. There are multitudes of voices calling for our attention. The Media and some intelligent sectors of society have identified our deep hunger and thirst… they know… and ferociously compete with each other to capture the affections of our heart.

Ironically, they are not alone in this pursuit. The God of heaven and the prince of darkness are after the same thing- your burning heart.

The battle at the end of the age rages around this…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Fire Within Your Heart
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Make no mistake about it, your affections will burn for something or someone. Your heart is not neutral. There are deep and strong passions within you. They’re like strong rivers of longing that search for an outlet until it’s found (the power of addiction is based on this reality).

We may like or not, but we’re dealing with deep affections and the charm of many lovers… in a sense, we’re being aggressively hunted…

What do we do? How do we live? How do we spend our time and our days? What or Who is worthy to be the object of our desire?

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heavens Call
~~~~~~~~~~~~

There is a Higher Calling. This calling is not new. Actually is quite old. John the apostle heard it, so did Mary of Bethany. You have probably heard it more than once… that voice above and inside that says: Come Up Here. Come Up Here and I will show you… I’m real… give me Your heart…

We are called to go deeper into the knowledge of God and his Ways. We are invited to join the fellowship of His Son (1Cor. 1:9) and journey into union with the Ultimate Lover of our Souls.

The fact you’re reading this far shows that this Calling is for you. If you were to hate God as so many today, the first paragraph of this article would have scared you away, but here you are…

Now is time to listen and encounter… your Creator is calling… He knows why your heart burns…

What Is A Heart Arrhythmia?

Jennifer Ransome | December 18, 2009

Your heartbeat is triggered by electrical impulses produced by the sinus node, a group of cells located within your right atrium. The electrical signal starts in your atria and works downward toward the ventricles. As it travels, it causes the individual chambers to contract, pumping blood throughout your body. This occurs between 60 and 100 times per minute.

A heart arrhythmia (HA) is a problem that either accelerates or slows your heartbeat. In many cases, they’re relatively mild and will not affect your standard of living. However, there are circumstances in which a problematic heartbeat can hamper the flow of blood to the rest of your body. If that happens, an arrhythmia can be potentially life-threatening. Below, we’ll describe a few types of arrhythmias that may require medical attention.

Atrial Fibrillation

One of the most common (and serious) forms of HA is atrial fibrillation (AF). This is a condition in which the atria quivers at a rate that can climb to 600 beats per minute. The beat is erratic and disorganized, and fails to travel the normal path from the atria to the ventricles. That prevents the atria from properly pumping blood to the ventricles and out to the rest of your body. Atrial fibrillation is not always life-threatening, but can increase the likelihood of suffering a stroke or heart failure.

Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia

The electrical impulses from the sinus node can occasionally reroute themselves back into the atria rather than traveling through the atrioventricular node to the ventricles. The condition is called paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) and causes an accelerated heartbeat within the atria. It rarely happens perpetually. Instead, it occurs and ends abruptly.

A condition that is related to PSVT is called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. This is characterized by the electrical signals traveling from the atria to the ventricles through an alternate route. The result is an erratic rhythm and heartbeat within the ventricles.

Ventricular Tachycardia And Fibrillation

Ventricular tachycardia is rarely serious. This is an arrhythmia in which the ventricles’ rhythm accelerates for a few seconds after which it returns to normal. Having said that, if the rapid beat continues for longer than a few seconds, ventricular tachycardia can become dangerous and lead to ventricular fibrillation (V-fib).

Ventricular fibrillation is characterized by the quivering of the ventricles. When this happens, the ventricles cannot pump blood to the rest of your body. This type of HA is potentially fatal is it is not treated immediately.

Bradyarrhythmias

The arrhythmias described above are tachycardias; they describe circumstances in which your heartbeat accelerates. Bradyarrhythmias represent the opposite effect – a circumstance in which your heart rate slows. In severe cases, the muscle cannot effectively pump blood. As is the case with ventricular fibrillation, it is potentially fatal if not treated quickly.

Not all arrhythmias are serious. However, if you suspect an abnormal heart rate, consult your physician to discuss your options.

Finding the right mitral valve surgeon or Maze procedure doctors is crucial. Find a cardiac surgery specialist.

How Many Types Of Calories Are There??

Ivan Girevoy | December 9, 2009

Calories, do you really understand its meaning, most people still do not know what a calorie is. When asked about its meaning, most people would link it to dieting. There is more to calories than just a word that is linked to weight loss.

Understanding Calories

Ok…here goes… “calorie is a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree at one atmosphere pressure; used by nutritionists to characterize the energy-producing potential in food.” This is how it is defined as per Wikipedia. What they do not tell you is that there are different types of calories.

The main types of calories include: carbohydrates, fats and proteins. All of them burn when used in the body and then turn into heat energy, which is generally called calories.

Each type of calorie varies in terms of chemical and physical properties. They can be found in various kinds of food, whether alone, in combination or even all of them. Here are the essential things that you need to know about each calorie type.

The Fear Of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the most common type of calorie. It is found on foods that are rich on starch and sugar. Most of them can be taken from plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, and grains. Legumes, such as lentils, beans, and peas, are also rich with carbs. However, dairy products would be the only foods that come from animals which have a lot of carb content.

Typically carbohydrates can be classified into two subdivisions: simple and complex.

Simple carbs are normally sugars, such as glucose and fructose, which come from fruits and a few vegetables. Another type would be lactose, which comes from milk. Last would be sucrose, which comes from cane sugar. (Rule of thumb is any thing that ends in “ose” is a type of sugar.)

Sugar that is for everyday use is pure sucrose. Most of the simple carbs that you eat are sugars are mixed with processed foods such as cookies, sodas etc. These add-ons are the major reason why sugar accounts for 16% to 18% of total calories that are consumed by Americans according to most health surveys.

Complex types of carbs are actually chains or series of simple carbs, which primarily consist of starches along with fiber, which can be found in all foods that come from plants. However, plants store carbohydrates in the form of starch. Foods that have high complex carbs would include grains and products that come from it like bread and pasta. Also, potatoes, beans, corn, and other vegetables are also high in complex carbs.

Shadowed Proteins

Since carbohydrates seem to be the most popular type of calorie, proteins on the other hand seem to be the most over shadowed in comparison with the fame of fats and carbs. However, it is an important kind of calorie that you’ll need to develop body muscle.

Proteins have 4 kilocalories per gram. Majority of this kind of calorie can not be naturally produced by the human body and must originate from dietary sources. The main sources of protein include: eggs, nuts, meats, legumes, grains, dairy products. (And yes some of these are also carb carriers.)

Recent studies suggest, men between ages 19 to 70 should consume 56g of protein everyday in order to avoid deficiency. On the other hand, women within the same age range should get at least 46g/day. Those people, such as certain athletes consume more protein then average in order to increase muscle mass.

Fats

Fats, would probably be the most unwanted kind of calorie by many. However, it still plays an important role in the normal function of the body. The body cannot absorb Vitamins A, E, D and K if not for it. They play an important role in the maintenance of healthy hair and skin. Protection is another function, since they protect various organs from shock. They are insulators, which is very important especially for people that live in colder climates.

Animals and plants both contain types of fats. Types of animal fats would include lard, butter and fish oil, while plant fats would include soy beans, peanuts, sunflower seeds, olives, coconuts, sesames, and vegetable oils.

What Is The Omega3 Omega 6 Ratio And Why Should You Care?

Peter Bertonach | December 6, 2009

Perhaps you’re already aware of the health benefits of essential fatty acids, and in particular Omega 3 fatty acids. There’s been plenty of news lately about these health benefits and many people now understand about the importance of maintaining an adequate intake of Omega3 fats, in which most of us are deficient. But have you heard about Omega 6 fats, and do you know what the Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio is?

We all need good fats known as essential fatty acids for good health. Our body cannot manufacture these itself and so relies on getting them through our diet every day. Omega 3 fats are found in fish, and the vast majority of us are deficient in Omega 3 intake.

However Omega 6 fatty acids are generally found in a range of plant-based food sources that we are not deficient in in our diet. You find Omega 6 fats in sunflower oil, sesame oil, peanut oil, corn oil and more, and soy oil is almost totally comprised of Omega 6 fatty acids.

Generally these vegetable oils are extremely cheap. Because they are cheap they are used in almost all processed foods requiring oil, including margarine. Most of us eat a diet high in processed foods and cook with vegetable oils and as a result our diets are too high in Omega 6.

Research has shown that in the past most of us had an Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio that was roughly 1 to 1. This meant that we ate about the same amount of Omega 3 as Omega 6 fats. But because we now eat much more processed foods and vegetable-based oils estimates are that the Omega 6 Omega 3 ratio has increased to somewhere around, depending on the estimate, from 10 to 1 to 30 to 1. We are now eating much more Omega 6 fats than we have ever done in the past.

Omega 6 essential fatty acids are equally important to our health however just as important is the Omega3 Omega 6 ratio, and over the past hundred years or so this is changed dramatically. By eating too much Omega 6 and too little Omega 3 we are all exposing ourselves to a wide range of health implications including the possibility of various cancers, coronary artery disease and a range of other inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.

And there is also an issue with our meat. Traditionally our farm animals have been raised on grass and this produces meat higher in Omega3. However farming practices have changed over the last hundred years and most of our meat now comes from grain fed animals which produces meat lower in Omega 3 and higher in Omega 6.

Whilst both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats are important to our health most of us are deficient in our intake of Omega 3 and have an Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio that is way too high, and we need to reduce our intake of Omega 6 fats. This can be done by reducing the amounts of processed foods in our diets and by changing our cooking oils from vegetable oils to good oils such as olive oil. And we all need to be increasing our intake of Omega 3 fatty acids with daily fish oil supplements.

Note that although fish oil supplements are extremely cost-effective not all are as good as others, you need to know how to compare the different fish oil supplements available to make an effective choice.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the Omega 3 Omega 6 ratio, or about how to compare the different brands of fish oil capsules, then visit my website to do so.

Does Taking Fish Oil Tablets Help Prevent Bowel Cancer?

Peter Bertonach | December 2, 2009

There are 2 important essential fatty acids that we need in our diet called DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), and these are found in fish oil and in fish oil tablets. These are called omega 3 essential fatty acids and over the last 4 decades there are many studies which have established the health benefits of increasing our intake of omega 3 fatty acids. These benefits include heart health benefits, prostate cancer prevention and breast cancer prevention, and now extend to helping to prevent bowel cancer.

A study undertaken in Scotland about the benefits of omega 3 to bowel cancer prevention found that increasing your intake fish oil can reduce your risk of colon cancer by up to 40 percent. These benefits came from an increase in the intake of DHA and EPA, however it was also noted that increasing your intake of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), a plant-based Omega 3 fat, did not reduce your risk of colorectal cancer.

The researchers found clear evidence that those with the highest intake of fish had a lower risk of bowel cancer and that those with a lower intake of fish had a higher risk of colon cancer.

A Dutch study also established, by comparing the results of– other studies, that one meal of fish every week reduced your risk of bowel cancer by an estimated 4 percent. Therefore if you eat 2 meals of fish each week your risk of bowel cancer reduces by around 8 percent.

We eat too little fish in the US, and in particular we eat too little fish to achieve these results in helping to prevent colon cancer.

Of course it’s not true to say that eating more fish will prevent colorectal cancer, but it is probably fair to state that increasing your intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids found in fish oil can be an important part of an overall diet to prevent cancer, and can attract a range of other health benefits, including reducing the risk of death from heart related problems, substantially.

So how do you go about increasing your intake of fish oil containing Omega 3 fatty acids? Fish is getting more expensive by the day and it is also known that fish is generally contaminated with heavy metals, PCBs and pesticides and the FDA tells us not to eat too much fish for this reason. So getting more fish in our diet is risky and expensive.

However there are excellent fishoil tablets available which overcome these problems. Fish oil tablets are small capsules containing omega 3 fatty acids and the best fish oil tablets are completely contamination free and are much more cost-effective to be taken daily than increasing your intake of fish.

But the quality of fish oil tablets varies widely and in particular the amount of the active ingredients DHA and EPA can vary by a factor of 2 or 3 and for this reason it is very difficult to directly compare the prices of the different brands available.

It seems clear from the research that increasing your intake of omega 3 fatty acids is a big part of staying healthy, including in helping to prevent bowel cancer. And as we are all eating too little fish we should all be considering daily supplementation with fish oil tablets.

For this reason sales of fish oil tablets are increasing faster than any other supplement in history, and I have taken daily fish oil tablets for a long time. To find out which Omega 3 supplements are my choice visit my website.

Should You Eat Mercury Contaminated Fish To Get More Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids?

Peter Bertonach | December 1, 2009

There is now little doubt about the health benefits of omega3 fatty acids. These have been well publicised recently and more and more people are becoming aware that the vast majority of us are deficient in our Omega3 fatty acid intake. Of course these essential fatty acids are found in fish oil which comes from fish, but how do we increase our intake of omega 3 when fish is contaminated with Mercury?

There has been a study published this year which has looked at Mercury contamination of fish in the North Pacific Ocean. It found that the level of Mercury in the North Pacific has increased 30 percent over 10 years from’96 to 2006.

Not only that but it also concluded that around 40 percent of all Mercury exposure of people in the US came from tuna consumption from tuna caught in the Pacific.

This is seriously worrying, because you do not want to be eating too much Mercury. It is a neurotoxin and it has serious health implications for adults, but in particular for the fetus and for infants.

It was found that Mercury made its way into the oceans because of atmospheric Mercury production as well as Mercury leakage from Asia. It was present in the oceans as methylmercury, and works its way up the food chain to the fish at the top of the food chain, commonly shark and tuna. And shark and tuna make up a large percentage of our fish intake.

So the conundrum for anyone that understands the importance of increasing their intake of omega3 fatty acids, and who also understands that the vast majority of our population is deficient in Omega3 fats, is that by increasing your intake of fish to increase your intake of Omega3 fats you are also increasing your intake of Mercury.

Fish is also a declining resource and over time the price of fish is going up and up. Is there a better way than eating fish to improve your levels of Omega3 fatty acids in your diet? Yes there certainly is.

The better way is by daily consumption of omega3 supplements. Fish oil supplements are extremely cost effective when compared to buying fish, and the best fish oil supplements are entirely free of Mercury. For both these reasons many people are now taking daily fish oil capsules, and the result is that the sales of omega 3 supplements have increased faster than any other nutritional supplement in history.

Of course if you like fish and wish to increase your intake of omega3 then you can do so by eating more fish, but this is expensive and increases your intake of Mercury. That’s fine if you understand this, however if you merely wish to increase your dietary intake of essential fatty acids without the cost or the risk of Mercury contamination omega3 supplements offer a safe and cost-effective way to do so.

But it’s worth saying that there are big variations between the different brands of omega 3 supplements, with the best fish oil capsules having more than 2 1/2 times as much omega 3 fats as average fish oil supplements.
