My First Time With Stand Up Paddle

I’ll never forget my first time on a Stand Up Paddle Board. My step father is Clay Feeter publisher of “Standup Journal”. He is a huge advocate of the sport as well as having the best magazine in the business! He is a super positive guy, fun to be around and will not let you have a bad time under any circumstance.

I remember going to visit my mom and him a few years ago and upon my arrival Clay was already primed up and ready to get me out on the lake for a stroll with the Stand Up Paddle Board. I always have to say yes to Clay because his positivity simply makes it impossible to give another answer.

We put the boards down in the water and Clay hopped on and started paddling with such ease and precision that I decided I could do the same thing. He made it look so easy, I guess it’s because he has been surfing the majority of his life.

I proceeded to get on my board and quickly learned that I needed some serious help in the balance department. I think I ended up off my board quicker than I got on it. I was craving a swim in the lake so it was O.K.

After a couple of quick tips from Clay I able to gain my balance on the board and quickly gained confidence. Clay gave a “Woo Hoot! You got it man!” In his usual fashion which always makes you feel like a kid who just got his first trophy. The feeling I got from Stand Up Paddling was absolutely amazing and one I will never forget. It is like you are walking on water. You paddle as fast or as slow as you want, the water is yours!

The great thing about it is you can Stand Up Paddle in any water. You can go down rivers, surf in the ocean, take a cruise on the lake or wherever else you want. It’s truly a fun and diverse sport which is gaining extreme popularity worldwide.

The people you meet while out on your stand up paddle board are amazing. Most of the time people are both curious about what you are doing and eager to try it for themselves. It’s a great sport to get hooked on because it is both adrenaline pumping, relaxing, and healthy all at the same time. I hope to see you out the soon!

The benefits of meditation have been well researched and proven over and over again in study after study. Although meditation is not a magic bullet, it has been shown to reduce heart disease, decrease anxiety and depression levels, stop headaches and lower blood pressure. It is amazing what the mind can do. Everyone can reap the benefits of meditation and learning new meditation techniques.

This type of meditation uses the imagination and visualization. To begin, close your eyes and imagine a golden thread running from the center of the Earth through your body and out to the edge of the universe.

Look at the thread coming out of the crown of your head. In your imagination picture following it up and up and up through the atmosphere, past the Sun and continuing on until you reach a great light at the edge of space. The thread embeds itself into the great light and becomes inseparably part of the light.

Now follow the chain from your body through the crust of the Earth, through the magma, through the mantle and finally arriving at the inner core of Earth. You see that the inner core is a pure radiant orange light. You understand that this is the Earth’s energy source. The chain binds itself to the light and as it does so, you feel yourself drawn towards Earth and grounded firmly.

Next notice your breathing, notice your feet planted firmly on the ground. As you emerge from your meditation, you feel fantastically energetic, clear-headed and renewed.

One of the easiest meditations to learn is a walking meditation. Walking meditation is great exercise and you get all the good things from meditation, all in one package. It is very simple to fit into any schedule and can be beneficial in even short snippets of time. Leave your dog at home when you do walking meditation, though. Trying to do both is an exercise in futility.

Start your meditation by just walking at a pace that feels right to you. Notice that your feet hit the ground and how that feels in your body. Feel your breath coming into and out of your lungs. Hear the rustle of leaves. Just focus on the present moment. If your mind starts to wander off, let the thought go without any stress whatsoever.

Some people find it helpful to listen to calm music during their walking meditation. Others prefer focusing on saying a mantra, phrase or prayer in their head. Or, just focus on body sensations. Once you are finished walking you should be feeling rest and ready to go.

Meditation does not have to be something mysterious, done only by monks sitting on cushions in a temple in Tibet. Everyone can find a meditation technique that appeals to them. Meditation can be done at any time of the day or night, and any repetitive activity (such as raking leaves, doing the dishes, painting, etc.) can be made meditative and easily fit into daily life.

Medicinal Mushroom Used in Korea as Cancer Therapy Adjunct

Out of Korea comes a new and increasingly popular medicinal mushroom known as Phellinus linteus. It does have a rarely used English common name, Black Hoof Fungus. But you are more likely to hear it referred to by its Japanese name as Mesima.

Phellinus linteus is common in Southeast Asia as well as the southern United States. It grows on hardwood species of oak, mulberries and poplar, and sometimes on pines. [1]

Most medicinal mushroom species used today in America came to us via China or Japan. Phellinus linteus is a break from this trend, as it first became popular in Korea where it’s commonly used to complement traditional cancer treatment.

From Korea, its reputation has spread like wildfire around the world. Doctors across the globe are now beginning to use it as an immune booster [2-11], and especially for preventing cancer metastasis. [5,10,12-17] Apart from Korea, Phellinus linteus is particularly popular in Japan, the U.S., and the Middle East from Israel to Turkey.

Perhaps it all got started when one of the first Korean studies on Phellinus linteus in’96 reported that it exhibited a wider range of immunostimulation and antitumor activity than polysaccharides isolated from other medicinal mushroom species. [4]

Seven year later, in confirmation of the Korean finding, America’s best known mycologist Paul Stamets published a paper which compared Phellinus linteus to several of the most highly regarded species of medicinal mushrooms: Cordyceps, Reishi, Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Maitake and Agaricus blazei. [18]

In this study, Phellinus linteus turned out to have the most powerful effect on enhancing the activity of macrophages, a type of white blood cell that’s an important part of the immune system. Macrophage activity was increased 5,700% by the Phellinus linteus extract. The dose used was equivalent to 3,750 mg for an average (165 lbs) adult. [18]

Although human macrophage cells have been known to both induce and inhibit cancer growth, the published research on Phellinus linteus shows that it promotes the anti-cancer properties of macrophages rather than their potential cancer-inducing properties. [8,14,19,20]

In addition to these studies, there are at least three published cases of spontaneous regression of cancers after patients of their own accord used Phellinus linteus extract:

1. First out was a Japanese article in 2004 with a case study of a patient with hormone refractory prostate cancer and bone metastasis who exhibited “dramatic remission” after using Phellinus linteus extract. [15]

2. In 2005, a Korean paper related the case of a 65-year-old patient with liver cancer and skull metastasis who experienced “spontaneous regression” after one and a half years of using Phellinus linteus. [17]

3. And then one year later, in 2006, another Japanese article was published on “a case of spontaneous regression of hepatocellular carcinoma with multiple lung metastases.” The 79-year-old patient had been taking an extract of Phellinus linteus Mycelium for a month. When examined by his doctor 6 months later, his tumors had disappeared. [16]
