To Successfully Quit Smoking, You Need a Multi-legged Stool

Darren Warmuth | January 20, 2010

No, I’m not crazy! I just thought it was a catchy title that would grab your attention and get you to read on.

What I’m alluding to here is a metaphor for what is one of the most effective tools you can use when quitting smoking. And that’s SUPPORT. What would you do if you had a stool with only one leg? Could you even use it? Suppose you tried. Do you really think that you would be able to concentrate on the job at hand if all you were thinking about is if the stool would fall over? Not very likely.

Would adding a second leg help? Of course. By concentrating on a stool that only moves side to side or back and forth, our attentions can be more focused on the goal we are seeking to accomplish.

How about a third leg? Is that any better? You bet – perfect stability. With this surefootedness we can focus all our attention on our task as we no longer have to worry about ending up on the floor if our concentration slips.

How does this metaphor relate to quitting smoking? Well, like the one legged stool, if you attempt to quit smoking on your own with no other support, it will be that much more difficult to stay focused. Why try to do it alone when there are friends out there who would be more than willing to help you. Adding another couple of legs to your efforts would be recommended to get more stability (support), but four, five or more friends would not be out of line either.

The important think to ask of the people whom you confide in for support is to ask that they remain at your disposal and not badger you with questions like ‘How is it going?’ everyday. You don’t want your support team to be a hindrance in trying to reach your goals, but a help. And one other thing. If you the courage to do it, make a deal with them and yourself in that if you ever decide you may want to have ‘just one’ cigarette that you MUST call each and every one of them and tell them you’ve decided to continue smoking. Make it through all your support ‘legs’ without being talked out of doing something silly like that and I would be quite surprised.

Get the right support and you will be free.

Be Ready to Quit Smoking

Darren Warmuth | January 10, 2010

Quitting smoking is not the first thing you should do when you decide to become a non-smoker. Yes, you have read that right – but it’s true. Indeed, quitting is one of the last steps you should take on the road to quitting smoking. It is the end, not the means. If you start with quitting smoking, you are most probably going to fail, and all your efforts will come to naught besides the damage it will do to your personality, your confidence in yourself and much more.

Usually, the thought of quitting smoking comes up only when you confront a virtual threat like a health scare or the realization that it is taking a heavy toll on your body. The reason is not important; what is important is that you have taken the decision to quit smoking. This is a huge achievement; don’t spoil it by rushing to the end without walking all the way. You will get nowhere.

You need to prepare and educate yourself to succeed in quitting smoking. Just as you wouldn’t attempt to rebuild your car’s engine just because you bought a set of tools off the shelf, similarly don’t suffer under any illusion that your resolve is all you need to do to quit smoking. And, there are no off-the-shelf remedies that will help you in your determination to stop smoking. Some would argue that the trial-and-error method would finally get them to the point of making the car engine, but it is a long and frustrating process. Why go through all that torture when you can get there easily through proper preparation and education.

The internet is your answer to all questions. Look at the available stop smoking programs and really compare them. Judge each program on the basis of the steps they follow. Always give preference to the ones that go about systematically by first providing information and then preparing you for the goal. Don’t get caught by catchy slogans that promise to free you of your habit in a week or ten days. Remember, easy bought is easily lost. You need to do thorough comparison shopping before you buy a program. The program must encourage you to take your time to learn and prepare as opposed to placing your faith in a product that states that there is no effort required on your part.

Your effort is most important; nothing comes without a little effort from you. And, this is all about you, so how can you not be involved in it? In fact, you should put in all your effort in the preparation stage and then leave the results to come on their own. Remember, quitting is the easy part – you just stop. It depends on the preparations you take before you quit. It is the preparations that determine your success or failure. So make sure you are ready to quit before you actually quit smoking.

Best of Luck,

Darren Warmuth

Stop Smoking Without NRT : The Real Scoop On Kicking The Habit

Chris James | January 8, 2010

Hopefully, this content will offer reasons for you to give up smoking naturally. Without the demand many folks appear to have for treatment techniques such as NRT. You can’t rely on these techniques to work, because numerous people have invested a great deal of time and income into this and they did not work for them. Later on in the article, we can dig a bit further into what a few strategies and processes are to stop smoking without NRT.

Smoking is a bad habit that many folks have been trying to quit for quite some time. You might be among the millions that try to quit every single year. With New Year’s approaching, you might be considering giving your hope of quitting one more try as a resolution. The good thing is that there are plenty of ways to quit smoking. Methods such as NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy) have been met with a good deal of success, although it might not work for everyone.

So it might be best to reconsider even starting a regimen like an NRT solution. You see, NRT is available in many different forms. You have gums, lozenges, patches and sprays. Literally aisles worth of products that attempt to supplement the nicotine your body craves without the need for you to light up. This way, you can rid yourself of the mental addiction to cigarettes while you walk yourself down the road of weaning yourself off of the physical addiction you have to the nicotine.

The trouble of this is that it just does not work out for everybody. You could be disillusioning yourself that you are breaking the nicotine hold when in fact it is still there. This is a hard barrier to overcome and an even tougher one to beat while still ingesting nicotine. If you’re amidst the several who have attempted ceasing smoking a few times, you will be able to empathize with exactly how hard this can be. A lot of folks need the band aid to be pulled away quickly. This could very easily be your situation.

The first thing you have to remember is to be persistent. No one is going to succeed in quitting if they don’t believe that they can. This requires you to remain positive and focused on kicking the habit and not taking no for an answer. You have to keep pushing yourself.

The best way to do this is to make a detailed list of all the reasons that you have to quit smoking. Not why you think you should quit, but why you need to. Think of some really practical things. For instance, family like a spouse or your children is a good place to start. Health concerns that can likely be fatal are amongst other things to consider.

The last bit of advice is to determine a specific day that you’ll quit smoking. It will aid you if you pick out a day of the month that may be important to you personally, something equivalent to a birthday or an anniversary. You’ll can also choose New Year’s Day, because it’s significant as a fresh starting point. Whatever date you choose, stick to it and you’ll be free forever.

It is very achievable to stop smoking without NRT. You do not require chewing gum or patches. What you do need is education, self control and will. Have faith that you will succeed and you will.

You Can Stop Smoking Naturally

Chris James | January 7, 2010

Depending on how long you have been smoking, you may have passed the point where you can easily quit if you wanted to. Once you pass that point, it is almost impossible to quit. The first step in quitting is wanting to do it. You must really want to quit. It is possible though, and you can stop smoking naturally.

Smokers usually do not care about all of the money that could be saved from quitting. Purchasing cigarettes has already become a priority. Smokers do not care that their ceilings and walls are stained or that they are always pungent with the odor of an ashtray.

You even know that you can die or get Cancer. While all of these reasons are perfectly legitimate, they are just not enough reasons to help make you quit. I can tell you a reason to make you want to quit. I can share with you the number one reason that you help you truly want to quit. Would you like to be able to endure a six hour plane flight? Would you like to be able to hold yourself from leaving a warm building in order to stand in sub zero temperatures so you can take a few hits off a cigarette? Would you like to finish a meal for once without leaving the table or not worry about how you will survive a new job that will not allow smoking breaks? Do you keep extra cartons of cigarettes around worried that there might be a natural disaster that will make cigarette purchasing impossible? If the answer is yes, then you despise the cigarette having control over you.

Gather up all your hatred and learn to despise the cigarette. You do not need to be controlled. This is the second step to helping yourself stop smoking. The first step is admitting that you are ready to try and quit. If you have already tried to quit once but failed, do not be discouraged. That is a good sign. It means that you are getting closer to committing yourself one hundred percent towards quitting. You will have more success at quitting. Go ahead. Hate that cigarette.

Now, once you are at this point, the point that you sincerely wish you could stop smoking. Let me tell you how you can actually stop without any help from anyone. You can stop smoking completely naturally without buying any products. Is it hard? Yes. You will need to be strong. You can stop smoking within a year. How do you do it?

You wait. You wait for a boost. The most perfect boost you can get for jump starting your attempt to quit smoking is this. Very simple. You wait until you get a cold. A cold that gives you a sore throat. A cold that gives you a fever. A cold that gives you a stuffed nose and cough. You wait until you are so sick that you can’t smoke.

With this type of cold, you will go three whole days without lighting up. This is your boost. Do not light up on the fourth day. You have already gone many hours without smoking. It will not be so hard to resist the urge. Take this moment to destroy any cigarettes laying around, no matter how much you paid for them. Destroy them deliberately and with pleasure. You can do it.

Now, you just resist the urges by doing things you normally don’t do when you were smoking. Go swimming for example. Read support forums on the web. Cut up straws and pretend they are cigarettes. The urges will gradually fade away and you will then hate cigarettes even more than a non smoker. Good luck!

Chris James wants to show you the best methods to stop smoking by helping you discover the best smoke deter systems around.

Some Facts about the Magic Stop Smoking Pill

Darren Warmuth | January 6, 2010

I know exactly why you are reading this article. It’s because of the title. It’s because just like I did, you are looking for the All New Recently Improved Super-Duper Stop Smoking Miracle Cure that 99% of smoking cessation products promise.

Well, I am afraid I have some bad news for you. It doesn’t exist yet. You still have to want to quit and put some effort in of your own. Yes, you read that right. You need to make the change and implement it of your own accord.

Regarding the ‘magic pills’, look at some interesting statistics:

* Quitting cold turkey is successful for approximately 3% of people (keep in mind that those 3% may not have quit on their first attempt).

* Many off-the-shelf pharmaceuticals claim to double your chances (6%) and increase them fivefold (15%) at best.

* Other newly released products claim nearly twenty times the effectiveness of cold turkey. However, this rate of success was achieved by giving huge incentives. There was a fully supportive group and a team of team of doctors and counselors watching over them and testing each phase, and to top it all, they were paid for their efforts as well. Any one would quit smoking if someone else is willing to spend thousands of dollars and dozens of hours to help them do it! But, this is not the ground reality. How many people would be fortunate to get into this select group? In the ultimate analysis, this improved wonder drug will ultimately fall into the same percentages as every other pharmaceutical offering.

The best success rate varies between 6% and 15% only. The magic 100% that the smokers would like to believe is an illusion. There is no doubt, nonetheless, that smoking cessation aids do help sometimes, and they can help more if you make a proactive effort on your part. All you have to do is place your faith in yourself and your ability to achieve your stop smoking goal and not rely completely on a pill or a patch.

The effort required on your part is basically about educating yourself and preparing to quit smoking. It’s not about willpower. You need to find out what the real truths are about your smoking habit and what it really takes to rid yourself of it. And, in order to gain all this, you need to select a program. You will find many fully encompassing information programs to help you meet this goal.

So, seek out all the information you can find about smoking, nicotine, quitting and the benefits of quitting. You need to spend a few days or weeks to find the information that will help you quit without relying on a ‘magic pill’ to do it for you. It is a small effort for breaking a habit you have built over decades, perhaps.

You’ll find that the more you know, the more successful you will be. This advice doesn’t just apply to quitting smoking, but in everything you do in life.

Best of luck for future,

Darren Warmuth

Trying’ to Quit Smoking isn’t Good Enough

Darren Warmuth | December 23, 2009

‘Try’ is a very weak word. Just ask any coach or personal trainer. They’ll both tell you that you won’t get very far by just trying. You have to commit. Without a totally committed level of thinking, it becomes very difficult to be successful. The same goes for quitting smoking.

Even though you are looking to convince yourself or someone else that you truly desire to quit, by saying ‘try’, you are conditioning your subconscious beliefs for potential failure.

Don’t belive me? Then consider this. Most people who aren’t afraid of heights or have a particular phobia about speed can ride roller coasters. Not my wife. She won’t get near them and we really can’t figure out the reason why.

And on any occasion when I or my son have been able to coerce her into standing in the line with us with the utmost belief that this time she is going, she always says ‘I’ll try.’ But wouldn’t you know it, by the time we reach the head of the line she has extricated herself to a position of safety, opting instead to wait for us at the end.

So what gives her a way out? The word ‘try’ of course. Trying isn’t like promising or really committing to something. It’s more like a convenience. And saying you’ll try isn’t going to work when quitting smoking because whether you realize it or not, you’ve probably set yourself up for failure because now you’ve allowed yourself a way out.

Talk to any smoker who has gone through this process, some of them more than once, and you will find that when they set out to achieve their goal of quitting they said ‘I’ll try’ and when they failed, they state ‘Oh well, I tried.’

Try and do that with this statement – “I am quitting (enter your chosen date) for good. For the good of my health; for the good of my family and for the good of my finances. FOR GOOD!” No excuses. You see the difference. You cannot allow any alternative options or ‘outs’ for yourself. You must commit fully and stick to your resolution. Of course your commitment doesn’t have to say exactly that but it must state the most powerful reasons as to why you want to quit.

Put this commitment in writing. Carry it with you everywhere. Have a copy in your vehicle; distributed around the house. Anywhere you can see it to remind yourself of what your true desires are. It will make all the difference in becoming a non-smoker.

Is Nicotine Replacement Therapy Right For Me?

Chris James |

The whole concept of nicotine replacement therapy is that it gives your body a low dose of nicotine to help ease the cravings. By putting a small amount into your system your withdrawal symptoms are not as severe. One of the major drawbacks for nicotine replacement therapy is that you go through nicotine withdrawals twice. The first time when you initially quit smoking and the second time when you stop the nicotine replacement therapy. On the plus side you don’t need to go to the doctor to get it.

Many people can find this very difficult, especially the second time around as that old familiar edgy feeling comes back and you basically have to go through a milder form of withdrawals for the next three days. People aren’t really prepared for that second wave of withdrawal and often have a hard time letting go of the nicotine replacement therapy. Those that can, have made a very important step to becoming smoke free and changing their lifestyle.

Nicotine replacement therapy comes in many varieties; the patch is the most common. Usually you will start with a higher dose and steadily decrease the dose over a 6 to 12 week period. Please note that the amount of nicotine delivered over th 24 hours often exceeds what the body can handle and can produce side affects.

The feeling of nausea and breaking out in a cold sweat is one of the side effects associated with using the patch. Often, this is an indication that the dose of the patch you are wearing is too high for your system and you can either try a lower dose patch the next day or it might be wise if you to look into a different form of nicotine replacement therapy. Although many people have used this with great success, everybody’s body chemistry is different and yours may not be adapted to this form of nicotine replacement therapy.

There are several forms of nicotine replacement therapy, the patch is no longer your only option. Nicotine gum now has improved in flavor and lacks that pepper taste that used to linger in your mouth. You don’t have to worry about feeling sick due to the taste, because now the nicotine gum comes in fruit flavors. The dosage schedule is controlled by you depending on your withdrawal symptoms.

Another form of nicotine replacement therapy is the lozenge, which is available in an assortment of flavors. These tablets will dissolve slowly in your mouth sending a low dose of nicotine to your body. The tablets usually work for 2 to 4 hours, but you can adjust your dosage schedule depending on your need. It’s possible that you will have some type of secondary withdrawal as you slowly sever your ties to the lozenge. Being smoke free is worth it in the end.

Another method of nicotine replacement therapy is the nicotine inhaler. It is a good method for anyone who needs to have something in their hand, a common problem among smokers. The inhaler sends a low dose of nicotine to your system which helps deter the cravings. I do not have first hand experience with the inhaler, but I have heard from several people who have been successful with it.

The majority of nicotine replacement therapy options is available without prescription nowadays and can easily be picked up at your corner drugstore or supermarket. The advantage would be, not having to have the added expense of going to the doctor, but you still have to expect to pay quite a bit even over the counter. And many of the products have an online support system available along with several forums, in which you can receive support from other people who are also using the product and trying to quit.

As mentioned before, some of the side effects of nicotine replacement therapy can range from: a slight headache, insomnia, to more severe symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea or constipation. Some of the side effects tend to be temporary, if they are too much you may want to think about changing your dose or about looking into other smoking cessation options, such as non- nicotine based medication.

Discover How To Quit Smoking Without NRT ( Nicotine Replacement Therapy).

Chris James | December 20, 2009

When I started smoking I didn’t realise how hard it would be for me to stop. Everyday I came up with resolutions but at the end of the day found myself desperately clutching onto a cigarette as if it was dear life. My alternative solution wasNRT using nicotine patches and bubble-gums to control the urge, but this was to no avail. I eventually realised that I was trying to quit the wrong way because the problem was really where the addiction started, in my mind. Ever since then I’ve been using natural methods to quit and these have been more beneficial than anything i had used before. In this article you will discover ways to quit smoking without NRT.

Addiction is more of a psychological condition than a physical one. It is for this reason that fighting addiction is all about finding an alternative for cigarettes. Replace cigarette smoking with an activity that will occupy your regular smoking intervals. Once you do this you will almost instantly observe how you won’t smoke cigarettes during those times. You might end up smoking afterwards but for that time you won’t be smoking at all. Eventually you should see yourself being more occupied than ever, it is at this time that you should take the following step.

Constantly remind yourself about the possible risks behind smoking. Cancer, bronchitis and TB are known side effects of smoking that you should tell yourself about every time you decide to smoke. You can even go to the extreme of looking at pictures of damaged lungs just to scare away your addiction. I wasn’t able to stop because I still saw the benefits of smoking, I still liked it.

After you do this you should proceed with making a long list of the advantages of not smoking. On average non-smokers live longer than smokers; you’re a whole lot healthier when you don’t smoke and you will always have more money to spend on other luxuries. What you don’t realise is that you still smoke because you see the benefits of smoking instead of the benefits of not, this is a major psychological misconception that has to be changed. Repeat these as a mantra or even draw up a visible list.

Fighting a nicotine addiction problem isn’t exactly easy if you try to do so alone. Go out there and sit down with close friends; relatives or peers. Tell them about your problem and insist on them applying whatever pressure they can to make you stop. When people close to you get emotional about your condition you will become more serious about your intention to quit. You can also give them the liberty to throw away your lighters or cigarettes if they see you with them.

Acupuncture works for some people. The urge to smoke is heightened by the fact that endorphins are released when you think of smoking. Endorphins are hormones that make you feel good naturally and their release is triggered by the prospects of pleasure that come with smoking. Now, the needles of acupuncture prompt the release of endorphins into the blood stream. Therefore you won’t feel like smoking because endorphin is being discharge into the system, a hormone that will make you feel good without taking a cigarette.

Hypnosis is the inducement of a trance-like state of mind during which a person repeats positive affirmations about something. The sole purpose of these is to change the way one sees and believes. The beliefs that smokers have about smoking are so deeply rooted that they are hard to change. Repeating mantras about stopping smoking will help to change them and set you on the path to recovery.

Natural herbs also work as an alternative to Nicotine Replacement Therapy. Try looking for Lobelia and Passion Flower, they work for some people.

Is Chantix All it Claims to Be?

Chris James | December 15, 2009

Chantix has been found to be one medication that has finally helped people to quit smoking when others have failed. Working like a nicotine blocker in the brain, it attaches itself to the nicotine receptors and blocks its absorption. And because there are fewer feel good receptors that the nicotine can freely attach itself to, it lessens the desire you have for a cigarette.

Using this method has helped many people quit without difficulty. Not only that, it has helped a lot of them quit without severe withdrawal symptoms. Even long term, multiple pack a day smokers have found themselves to be successful. One thing you need to do however, is first check to see if your insurance company will cover the cost as many nowadays are reluctant to pay for smoking cessation products.

Since Chantix contains no nicotine, it is not necessary to quit smoking when you begin the medication. You will receive a starter pack that gradually builds up the medication in your system over the next two weeks.

With this in mind, it is important that you pick a day to quit somewhere towards the end of the two weeks, however there have been some who actually extend this up to three weeks, which allows the medication in their system to build up even further.

Several side effects to Chantix have been recorded. Naturally they vary from person to person, but are normally short-lived. These effects can be anything from headaches, excessive gas, nausea or in some notable cases, extremely vivid dreams.

The support with Chantix is also quite good with a free online system that begins even before you start to take your medication. This includes daily e-mails updates and stop smoking projects designed to help keep your efforts going in the right direction.

Chantix is not for everybody and although it is a very promising medication, some people have more of the psychological addiction to nicotine, than a physical one. In the latter case Chantix could work very well and does offer some behavioral support. However if you have more of the psychological addiction to nicotine Chantax may not be the right medication for you and your doctor may recommend a different medication better suited to your needs.

Whatever you do, do not think that Chantix, or any other stop smoking aid for that matter, is the magic pill that is going to make you quit. Only medications used with a strond desire to quit have a chance of being successful. The medications, Chantix included, are only there to give us an edge in quitting, not do it for us.

You Won’t Regret if You Stop Smoking Naturally

Chris James |

For those who smoke, quitting may seem as though it is not even an option because when they tried and failed, it became an impossible feat. However, you can stop smoking naturally and remain a nonsmoker for the rest of your life. You can do this without chemically formulated drugs and patches that have some side effects that are as dangerous as those of smoking.

When you smoke, you are not only doing it out of the satisfaction that your brain chemical dopamine is signaling to you. You’re smoking because you have in your subconscious mind that you are not going to be the one who gets cancer or those heart attacks happen to someone else, not you. You are smoking because you look forward to relaxing with that cigarette after dinner or at break time at work. You will have to retrain your subconscious mind into not liking anything that surrounds smoking.

You are going to have to have a whole lot of will power to retrain your subconscious mind into despising smoking and everything that surrounds it. Some people do this through hypnosis and some are able to do it without even realizing that is what they are doing. You need to write notes and post them everywhere with the reasons why you don’t want to smoke. Read them every time you see them.

You need to focus on the good parts of not smoking. Meditate and breathe in deeply, becoming aware of just how deeply you ca breathe in. Use aromatherapy while doing this and you will even notice how much better your sense of smell is as well. This is one way to stop smoking naturally.

It is a known fact that you lose a lot of your sense of smell when you smoke. You also know that your breathing is raspy and taking a deep breath can be painful and sometimes impossible when you smoke. You should use aromatherapy and meditation together to ease your mind and those cravings. You will get a taste then how much better you can smell and how much deeper you can breath.

You can use natural herbs to help you to ease the physical cravings and withdrawal symptoms you are going to experience for the first weeks of no smoking. St. John’s Wort will help in the depression that comes with nicotine withdrawal while Skullcap and Valerian will ease the cravings and calm you.
