Contracting Pubic Lice

Harry Cross | January 6, 2010

Pubic lice, as the name suggests, are parasites which infest the pubic area of the individual in addition to other parts of the individual’s body and bear a close resemblance to crabs due to their physical appearance. These parasitic creatures are most harmful when they are six weeks old and a microscopic examination reveals the presence of legs.

There are many ways in which the public lice can transmitted from one individual to another. The most common method of transmission is through sexual contact when they jump from the pubic hair of one person to that of the sexual partner although other methods of contraction are through linen like clothing, bedding, washcloths and towels.

Since the infestation of pubic lice on an individual cannot be detected through the manifestation of symptoms like other infections, the only way in which their presence is revealed is through a feeling of persistent itchiness. If not attended to immediately, the situation can aggravate when these parasites dig into the skin of the individual and start sucking the blood.

When the lice bite on the skin of the individual, he feels compelled to scratch the area persistently thus, making it raw in the process and hence more prone to traditional and secondary bacterial infections. Constant scratching also causes transmission of lice to other individuals as these creatures jump on to clothing, bedding and other material which are in close proximity.

The pubic lice are normally dormant during the initial stages of their life-cycle and this dormancy lasts as long as the first four weeks. It is only subsequent to this inactive phase that the lice become active and commence their action on the infested host thereby making their presence felt.

Parents of young children should be particularly alert with regards to pubic lice as they are capable of infecting young children as well. This condition namely blepharitis, causes the lice to reside on the eyelashes of the child and therefore such areas should be regularly scanned by parents with the help of a high powered magnifying glass.

Public lice, or crabs, have the ability to live from one to two days apart from feeding on human body. However, many people hold misconception that they can be transmitted when sitting on a toilet seat or on furniture. This is not true because lice that normally fall from a person’s body usually become injured and dye. Also, public lice cannot jump from one person to another like a flea can. Furthermore, they cannot be contracted from animals.

Although the majority of incidents where a person contracts public lice, or crabs, is through sexual contact with an infected person, there are other ways that these nasty little parasites can infect an individual. Any contact with bedding or clothing used by an infected person can lead to a transfer to the individual touching this material.

Although it is a great and wise practice to employ some form of protection during sexual contact, especially for people who are active with more than one partner, use of condoms and other protections will not reduce the risk of becoming infected with public lice because these items do not cover an individual’s pubic area.

Harry Cross authors many articles regarding pubic lice and other common diseases. Many people do not know the facts about STD’s, and their embarrassment and lack of knowledge often to improper pubic lice treatment and action.

Pubic Lice: Eight Steps For Proper Treatment

Tamali E. Burns | December 27, 2009

People get infected by public lice through physical intimacy between partners as the infection is liable to be transmitted. The infection is obtained via contact when the garment or similar articles of the infected persons are used by others.

This infection, of crabs as they are known for their appearance under the microscope, can be treated with either over the counter drugs or the prescription medicines. The treatment of this transmitted disease is altogether different from the treatment of other sexually transmitted diseases.

Prediculicide, which is a mixture of one percent permethrin or pyrethrin lice shampoo is prescribed very often for the management of crabs, i.e., public lice infection. They are easily available at the medical store locally and without any need of a doctor’s prescription. The use has to be done as per the direction of the manufacturer to get the optimum efficacy of the product. Lindane is a brand name of a product for the treatment of public lice, which can be obtained with a valid prescription of a doctor. This is prohibited for the use by pregnant mothers and children below two years of age.

You must be careful so that no medicine reaches your eyes whenever you use the medicine for the treatment of public lice:

1. You should wash out the affected area and get it dried with a towel.

2. Apply the solution on the pubic hair area properly. Keep the over the counter medicines to remain on the affected part of the body for a minimum of 10 minutes and for prescription drugs for 4 minutes. Use plain water to wash out the area of any medicine and get it dried properly with a towel.

3. Use your fingernails or some comb soaked in medicine for taking out the dead nits from the hair of the affected part.

4. Once you have removed all the dead nits, put on clean underwear and clothing.

5. You must also kill any lice and nits that may be attached to your clothing and bedding. Make sure when cleaning any machine washable items to include all that you have come in contact with three days prior to the treatment. All machine washed items should be cleaned at a high temperature of at least 130F. Make sure to dry all machine-washed material at the hottest setting for 20 minutes at least. Dry clean any clothing that is not machine washable.

6. It is vital to inform your partner about this so that the treatment for both is undertaken con- currently.

7. It is obligatory to suspend all sexual intimacy for a period of two weeks when the examination is conducted and treatment continues till the result of the treatment.

8. A repeat medication would be necessary if the infection is found to be present after 10 days.

Your fingernails are enough to take out the nits from your eyebrows and eyelashes if there are a few only. In case of dense presence, you should consult a doctor to have ophthalmic grade petroleum jelly for medication. This medicated grade of petroleum jelly is applied two times in a day and should be continued for two weeks. You should never use petroleum jelly that is available in the local store as an over the counter product. Application of this will create irritation in your eyes and it may be harmful for the health of your eyes.

Tamali E. Burns wrote this article to provide accurate information to help people with proper pubic lice treatment and knowledge. Getting rid of pubic lice is a difficult task that often doesn’t fly on the first try. Proper actions are a must, to successfully cure yourself of these annoying pests.

Pubic Lice Facts and Options: How to Properly Treat Pubic Lice

Jennifer M. O'Leary | December 4, 2009

While head lice is such a common problem in schools that it has practically become a childhood rite of passage with very little stigma associated, the same cannot be said for pubic lice. Unlike head lice, pubic lice is something which people tend to be quite embarrassed about and certainly do not discuss with others; many are hesitant to bring it up even to their own family doctor. It’s not a problem which people should be so ashamed of, but there is certainly something wrong with not treating pubic lice at once and allowing these extremely bothersome pests to spread to others.

Also known by the name crabs, pubic lice are something which anyone can catch. Even though we tend to associate pubic lice with sex, this is hardly the only way which they can be spread. In many cases, people catch these lice without having had any sexual contact – and if you were wondering, you cannot catch pubic lice from a toilet seat either. It is much more common that these pests are picked up by touching clothes or bedding which has been infested with lice. People of all ages can be affected if they are exposed to lice or eggs; and when this happens, it is vital to immediately begin treating pubic lice.

It is the groin area where pubic lice tend to take up residence and if you find yourself having a lot of pubic itching, this may be a sign of infestation. Being able to see lice moving around is a surefire sign, but it is by no means the case that you will see this. Pubic lice go through a few different stages of growth, but even if you don’t see live lice, you may see dead lice or nits if you’ve been infested.

Treating pubic lice as soon as possible is essential if you’ve been infested – and any clothes or bedding in your home needs to be treated as well. Otherwise, the lice will simply come back; their eggs will be lying around and once they hatch, the problem will be right back.

One thing to keep in mind is that a pubic lice infestation spreads very quickly. For instance, if even one student living in a dormitory catches lice, the entire building needs to be treated. Treating pubic lice infestations in homes should also be done aggressively. If one person in your household catches lice, it’s only a matter of time before it spreads to everyone else. While adults will most likely have these lice in their pubic hair, children may have them in other spots, particularly their eyebrows. Thankfully, these lice only infest people, so you won’t have to inspect or treat your pets for pubic lice.

When treating pubic lice, you need to immediately take all of the clothes, bedding and towels in your home and double bag them in plastic bags. Keep these items in bags until you can wash them in very hot water – if there is any chance that there could be pubic lice or eggs on your furniture or in carpets, then these should be steam cleaned at once. Ask your doctor about which products to use for treating pubic lice; many products designed for head lice can be used, but your physician can advise you on what will work best for you.

Other than clothing, bedding and furniture, you may need to treat your curtains. If you have long curtains which reach to the floor, this is likely to be the case. There are pubic lice sprays and other products which can be used to treat these items since washing your furniture and curtains may not be practical, but is important when treating pubic lice.

For treating pubic lice on your body, watch carefully for any signs of their presence and tell anyone who you may have exposed to the lice or that may be the source of your own infestation. This allows them to begin treating themselves and their homes to eliminate the lice and prevent them from spreading further.

You’ll probably need a lice shampoo (also known as a pediculicide) for treating pubic lice; these shampoos can usually be bought over the counter, but keep in mind that they will only work if you make sure to use them as directed. Before using the shampoo, wash the area of the infestation thoroughly and then completely cover the area with the shampoo or other lice treatment. Afterwards, you should remove any dead lice or eggs with a special lice comb.

It is best to buy new underwear or make sure that all bedding, including underwear, has been washed in extremely hot water, as close to-0-160 degrees as possible. The dryer should also be at the hottest setting. Dry cleaning will work for any clothing that can’t be washed.

Jennifer M. O’Leary studies and writes about STD’s, including pubic lice and other common issues. Crabs is a STD which effects a few million Americans each year, but it doesn’t have to be a catastropy. Effective pubic lice treatment cures are available.
