Gemstone Candle Holder Information
Jim Slate | November 28, 2009Gemstone is a semi precious material that is most often used to make jewelry. However it can also be repurposed, many times, to create beautiful and exotic pieces of home dcor. One of the most popular decorative gemstone items out there are candle holders.
There are a wide variety of gemstones on the market, with each having very distinct properties and appearances. Some may have a very smooth, shiny, polished surface that reflects light in a million tiny points. Others may have a more rustic, rocky, weather beaten appearance. Still others will resemble caverns of crystals with an intricate latticework of transparent lines running through the belly of the material.
The appearance of the material will have an large impact on the function of the piece as a candle holders. Some of these materials are translucent, meaning they will let a filtered version of the candles glow leak out, others are opaque, meaning that the glow wont show at all, except for the flicker of the candle itself above the rim of the holder. Still others will be nearly clear, giving you a glass like perspective into the stone itself.
The surface of the material is also important. Some gemstones are smooth and polished, while others are rough and rustic, resembling the surface of a mountain, These two finishes will have vastly different effects when used in conjunction with a flickering candle.
Some common gemstones you might find being used in candle holders are materials such as agate, or amethyst, quartz, rose quartz, or even sodalite. Really any material which is not flammable and which can be shaped by a tool can be used for candle holders.
There are also often a number of different shapes and style available for these pieces. Some are made to hold candle sticks, while others are designed to hold tea light candles. Still others can be used to hold multiple candles, each one flickering in a line next to the others. The design you choose should reflect the space and style of the room where they will be used.
