So last week I had to go with my girlfriend to this cooking class she is taking. She is preparing to enter into culinary school, and wanted to get some preliminary training. So being the good boyfriend that I am, I went along to support her.

The problem was when I started falling asleep while the lady was giving the beginning instructions. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t keep my eyes opened. Which seemed strange because I went to bed the same time as always the night before, and woke up the same time on that day.

Her dad for the longest time had this problem when she was a kid. He would always snore, keeping the whole house awake. Finally her mom convinced him to go see a doctor about it, and it turned out he had sleep apnea. Snoring is one sleep apnea symptom. The worst part is that people that snore usually don’t know that they snore. It takes some courage to confront them with this.

Some of the common symptoms are waking up several times during the night for no reason, excessive snoring, headaches during the day, and feeling tired when you are bored. If you get enough sleep, when you are bored, you should just be bored, and not tired. This is why my girlfriend was worried.

Now my girlfriend doesn’t know if I snore or not, but she was kind of worried since I was so sleepy during the day. She also noted that other times I felt tired when I shouldn’t have. Like the other night when I fell asleep during the romance comedy we were watching.

The doctor told me it was too early to tell. He suggested I pay close attention to my feelings and my sleep the next few days, and to look out for symptoms like daytime headaches, and waking up during the night for no reason. Then he can figure out an appropriate treatment.

Common symptoms of sleep apnea are daytime drowsiness. This can happen even though it feels as if you are getting a full eight hours sleep. While you may feel like you have slept for eight hours, the quality of the sleep may be very poor. Other symptoms include headaches, and frequent rising during the night to urinate.

To get proper treatment, a visit to a physician is a must. To increase your chances, keep a log of all your symptoms, as well as a sleep journal, to jot down any feelings or other information should you wake up during the night. Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Snoring is very common. In fact, almost every breathing being on the planet snores. Babies snore, teenagers snore, and of course middle-aged men like me snore. That doesn’t mean that everyone snores all the time – it just means that from time to time we all make those irritating, loud, trumpet-like sounds when we sleep. And when it happens just periodically, it’s no big deal. But when it happens all the time, it can be a big problem.

There are three main reasons why constant snoring is a problem. The first reason is because it will wake up and bother your sleep partner. That’s not a good thing. The second reason is because snoring constantly will tend to disrupt your own sleep and leave you feeling more tired and less rested. The third reason is that snoring constantly could be a tell-tale sign that you’re a sleep apnea sufferer and that carries with it some severe health care risks.

As we sleep, our airways can become partially blocked. That’s what causes our snoring. The muscle tissue in our throats actually relaxes a little too much and blocks off our airway. If the tissue partially blocks the airway, we will snore but if the tissue completely blocks the airway, we will experience sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is the momentary cessation of breathing – you actually stop breathing multiple times during sleep. In most cases, you don’t even know it’s happening. Here’s what happens.

As the airway becomes blocked, breathing becomes impaired until it stops completely. It takes several moments for the brain to recognize that this has happened but when it does it jolts the body into a more alert state. The body wakes up a bit and adjusts enough to open the airway back up. From there, regular breathing resumes only to stop again when the next blockage occurs.

This happens dozens of times each night and so the sleep apnea patient ends up spending most of their sleep time in the lighter sleep states and not enough time in the deeper, more restful sleep states the body needs. And with less real rest, the sleep apnea sufferer will feel not only habitually tired each day, but they’ll also feel hazy and less focused as well. When sleep apnea goes on for months or years, it can severely affect the cardiovascular system causing permanent harm.

It’s important to understand that just because someone snores it doesn’t automatically mean they suffer from sleep apnea. But on the other hand, many sleep apnea sufferers are also big snorers. So snoring simply can’t be ignored.

If you think you may be suffering from sleep apnea, first ask your sleep partner. They may already have witnessed breathing stoppages while you sleep. Then, even if your sleep partner can’t help or you sleep alone, talk to your doctor because sleep apnea is treatable.
