Maintaining Your Health – Get A Good Night’s Sleep

Ali Bautista | January 13, 2010

Sleep is very important to a person’s health though many individuals do not realize how important. If you do not get enough sleep then you are risking your health in the long run. You won’t feel the effects now but you will later on in life. To stay healthy you need about 8 hours of sleep a night.

In order to compensate for the lack of sleep the vast majority of individuals will turn to coffee or sugary foods to keep them alert and give them a boost of energy. While these foods may help for a very short time they cannot compete with a good night’s sleep and can actually make it more difficult for you to sleep the next night. They also have adverse health effects.

While sugary foods may give you a short boost of energy this alertness does not last for long. Once the sugar has worn off you will feel even worse than when you got up. Your reaction time will be much slower and you will feel even more tired. Instead you should eat a combination of carbohydrates and protein. A great snack is a combination of apples and peanut butter.

The caffeine in coffee can help keep you alert but it can also prevent you from sleeping. The caffeine in the coffee you drink during the morning will actually stay in your system for 12 hours, much longer then feeling the effects of caffeine. If you drink coffee all day long then you may be preventing yourself from sleeping. It is better to have food and drinks that only contain a small amount of caffeine, try soda or chocolate instead.

Even those that drink decaffeinated coffee are not safe because this type of coffee still has caffeine in it. The caffeine in decaffeinated coffee is equivalent to drinking a 12 ox coke. Decaffeinated coffee is a good option for individuals that are not sensitive to caffeine.

So in order to stay healthy try and cut out some of the caffeine and work on getting a good night’s sleep. Exercise can help if you have trouble falling asleep at night.

What is a nightmare?

Matthew Wong | January 12, 2010

Nightmare is a common experience for everybody as I believed. Though sometimes you are more conscious about them and sometimes not. Nightmares not only happen to children, many adults in fact face the problem of nightmare, too. Nightmares make you feel terrified and unpleasant. Very unluckily, you usually tend to remember clearly your nightmares instead of forgetting them. What are the causes for nightmares? Can we avoid the nightmares?

If you ask why there are nightmares, there are probably many different possible answers. Sickness is one of the most used explanations. When your body is physically uncomfortable like children suffering from fever, you may have nightmares. Also, if you are taken certain medicines, you are more likely to have nightmares. Such medicines may include levedopa and beta-blocker.

Another cause for nightmares can be stress. Stress from work, families, relationships and unexpected changes to your life can cause nightmares. Nightmares are always said to be a form of release to the daily built stress. Sometimes, you are actually unable to withstand such high pressure from your surroundings, but you are forced to, then, such over-pressure is released in your nightmares.

Childhood memories can also cause nightmares. Of course the memories talking about are usually the unpleasant ones. Sometimes you may not know the nightmares are actually caused by unpleasant childhood with neglect or abuse as you were too young to remember in your childhood.

Nightmares though serves some of the psychological healing purpose, most of them are disturbing. People usually get upset and anxious or poor sleep when they have the nightmare problems. Therefore, it can be extremely important to some people to prevent nightmares and enhance their quality level of sleep.

To prevent nightmares, you need to get into a good habit of sleep. Go to bed and get up around the same time. Try not to read scary book or watch scary movie before going to bed. Do not drink (alcohol) too much. You may turn on a little bit light as people feel safe when they are in light. Keep the room air fresh by open windows.

If unfortunately, your nightmare continues say more than once a week or if your quality level of sleep is significantly impaired, you may need to consult a doctor. If you do that, the doctor will give you pills as medication. The other way can be tied is to write down your nightmares. Think of the nightmare again but in the way you wish. Keep doing it continuously and you may find the nightmare goes away.

How To Recognize And Exterminate Sleep Apnea For Good

Chester Umber | January 7, 2010

There are countless things that can invade a healthy life and cause immense amounts of harm. Some come in silently, others make their presence known. These are often easier to deal with, as you know what you are up against. The ones you need to worry about, are the ones that sneak in quietly and with stealth.

One such condition is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs at night, when you are sleeping. As a consequence many of the millions of sufferers are not even aware that they have this condition.

If you think you have sleep apnea, there are a few telltale signs, or symptoms that can help you to diagnose this. One of the tricky parts about deciding if you have sleep apnea or not is that many of the symptoms can easily be mistaken for other, more common and less serious ailments. Consequently, they are often ignored.

One simple test is to see how tired you get when you are bored. If you’ve spent six or seven hours the previous night, seemingly asleep, and yet get tired relatively quickly during the day, chances are you have sleep apnea.

Obviously, night time is the best time to check for apnea symptoms. If you have a helpful spouse or partner, ask them to monitor your breathing with a critical ear while sleeping. If you consistently stop breathing periodically during the night, this is an obvious indication of sleep apnea. This is particularly easy to determine if you snore. Another way to do this is to record yourself with a tape recorder during sleep, or to keep a sleep journal. Many people have found these particularly useful.

Once you collect sufficient information, it will be much easier for your doctor make an accurate diagnosis, and give you a proper recommendation. In some cases, this will some simple things you can do right away. Other cases might involve more effort. Regardless of the prognosis, be sure that by collecting the right information and presenting them to your doctor, a good nights sleep is closer than you think.

To discover what to do regarding your sleep apnea symptoms, have a glance at Chester Umber’s apnea symptoms page now.

Missoula chiropractor | Chiropractor Missoula Your Health-The Road to Wellness. Article #1-Sleep

Dr. Shaun Stuto | January 4, 2010

In this first installment of “Your Health“, missoula chiropractor Dr. Shaun Stuto discusses the crucial role of sleep in your road to wellness. Dr. Stuto is a chiropractor, author, speaker and owner of Transformation Chiropractic. “Your Health” is also available online at Youtube-Missoula Chiropractor . Through a series of ongoing articles we will explore the aspects of health which fall under the umbrella buzzword of “wellness.” We hear this word all the time on television and read about it in the newspaper and magazines but who is defining it? Wellness can be accurately described as the point along the health spectrum between “excellence” and “perfection.” It is the polar opposite of disease and death. There is no pinnacle of wellness. The value lies in the journey and specifically within the implementation of certain behaviors and habits that make up a “well” person. These factors might include a healthy diet, active lifestyle, low blood pressure, appropriate height:weight ratio and low mental stress. At what point does excellent health become perfect? There is no such point of arrival to perfection because health is dynamic and always changing.

The first aspect of wellness we will dive into is sleep. Next to a well adjusted spine and optimized nervous system, sleep and nutrition wrestle for second place when it comes to your wellness journey. How much sleep are you averaging per night? How much sleep do you actually need to feel your best? I frequently hear patients say that they need 7-9 hours of sleep to feel their best and find out that they average only 5-6 hours/night 5-7 days/week. It is common to find patients with an 80-120 hour/month sleep deficit! Sound like you perhaps?

The effects of this type of sleep deprivation are massive. This type of person has no energy. They are irritable and stressed. Often this type of patient is driven to be the perfect worker, the perfect spouse, the perfect parent, the perfect child etc… It is no surprise that this type of person cannot maintain this lifestyle forever. They often develop inexplicable symptoms such as aches and pains. The most common areas of pain show up in the neck and lower back. What is the quickest way to make a person slow down and rest? Low back pain! When the low back goes out, you go down and have to rest. The body has the innate intelligence to know when and how to put you down and force you to rest.

Unless you are an elite athlete training hours/day and burning thousands of calories, you should not need more than 7-9 hours of sleep per night. If you need less than 6 hours see a doctor and if you need more than 9 see a psychologist. It is quite possible that compounding emotional and psychological factors are contributing to your need to sleep so much.

Comfort is the most important aspect of sleep. If you aren’t sleeping well, you will not heal. You will not recover from workouts, stress, and life. We all lead high stress and high paced lives and we must maximize the time we get in bed. I coined the phrase “invest in your rest!” It means spend the money for a high quality bed. Make price a non-issue. You will thank me for it!

As your Chiropractor, I personally recommend the Sleep Number bed to ensure your comfort. Remember make price a non-issue. We spend 1/3rd of our lives in bed so we must ensure the highest quality rest possible. The sleep number bed virtually guarantees your comfort because the firmness of the bed is so variable. This is the solution for couples with different mattress preferences. No longer will one person be left to toss and turn. It is so common for households to spend $1000′s on a fancy couch and a flat screen T.V. but want to sneak by with a $300 bed. Does this make sense? No way! Where did you get your bed? Do you remember? How old is it? Do you even know? If you cannot even answer these questions then skip the rest of the article and go order a sleep number bed. Seriously, invest in your rest and do not spend another night on a bed that is hurting you.

We have covered the essentials for effective sleep. Sleep 7-9 hours per night on a high quality bed. A sleep deficiency and poor sleep quality can lead to poor health, physical pain, and emotional stress. Such stress could lead to cravings for sugar. Poor sleep can actually make you fat! On the contrary, a high quality bed can actually help you feel more energy and lose weight.

Start putting health and wellness atop your priority list and keep it simple. Dedicate yourself to regular chiropractic care to ensure optimal health and function of your nervous system. Find a healthy eating plan you can stick to and implement a consistent exercise program. The last step is to rest. Get your 7-9 hours of nightly uninterrupted rest on the highest quality bed you can afford.

I am Dr. Shaun Stuto. This is “Your Health.” I wish you a life of abundant health!

Are You Suffering From Sleep Apnea Symptoms? Here’s How To Find Out

Chester Umber | January 2, 2010

In the United States today, there is a growing medical condition that is both dangerous and life threatening. It can cost thousands of dollars in income, and create a host of other medical problems if left untreated. And the most disturbing thing is this condition can be extremely hard to diagnose unless you are specifically looking for it. The problem is sleep apnea.

Only recently discovered sleep apnea is starting to get serious attention from the medical community. More and more research centers are developing sleep centers to get a better handle on this terrible sleep robbing condition. Only by a concentrated effort by both patient and physician can this condition be stopped.

This can be a very hard condition to have. There is no blood scan, or collection of symptoms that point to sleep apnea and only sleep apnea. The reason this is such a hard thing to pin down is because apnea symptoms are often thought to be normal, everyday ailments that come with normal, everyday life.

What are the exactly symptoms? The purest indication of sleep apnea is if you stop breathing while you are asleep. Since you are usually sleep, you don’t notice. So you have to rely on secondary indicators, like headaches, drowsiness, and an inability to concentrate. One test is to see how sleepy you become if you are bored. If you feel sleepy relatively quickly, despite having a full nights sleep, that could be an indication of sleep apnea.

So can you be sure? The simplest way is to record yourself while sleeping, or ask your partner if you make any noises like you are stopping breathing. The more data you collect, the easier it will be for your doctor to figure out what to do.

Once you understand the symptoms, and learn to collect the appropriate data, you can be much more confident of being able to treat your sleep apnea.

If you’d like to obtain more information on sleep apnea symptoms, have a peek at Chester Umber’s sleep page today.

Fast Tips For Females Suffering From Sleep Disorders

Ada Petrov | December 29, 2009

Insomnia is a big problem for anyone suffering from it. Not only does it affect your lifestyle but it also ruins your health and brings upon the weakened immune system. For many, the inability to sleep can be a real nightmare.

While our bodies long for sleep, it’s not always easy to achieve. Studies show that about 49% of people are getting less than the ideal 7 to 8 hours worth of shut-eye each night.

If you’re a woman in your forties, it’s a probability that you too might have issues getting enough shut-eye each night. It’s not surprising that a lot of women in this age group have insomnia, considering the number of family and financial-based issues they have to worry about. Menopause also occurs around this time and the female body goes through drastic changes.

For most, reaching the stage of menopause can cause stress and anxiety levels to rise in many women. If you find yourself in this situation, just know that it will pass and it’s a stage that every woman has to go through – it is normal. Worrying about it will only make your insomnia worse.

There are several solutions to getting back into sleep. It is best to avoid taking sleeping pills and try to regain a healthy sleeping routine via natural means. You should try the following:

Maintaining a routine is important and you should try your best to wake up at the same time daily during the working week, and also weekends if possible (we all love sleeping in on Saturdays but doing that could break our pattern for the following week).

Many people find that by reading, or doing something boring helps put them to sleep each night. Get out your favorite book or listen to some classical music perhaps (whatever you fancy). Stay away from anything that would stimulate your mind or body and cause restlessness. Avoid drinking any coffee at least four hours before bed time.

Also make sure your room is completely dark. Draw the curtains and shut off as many lights as possible in order to reduce any further stimuli. If you happen to wake up in the middle of the night, rather than trying your hardest to get back to sleep (which usually doesn’t work), try sitting up in bed and stare at a blank wall with your eyes wide open. Try not to sleep, and you will often realize the opposite effect.

In addition to women’s issues, the author also writes about car accessories along with buying a pink steering wheel cover within his own web blog.

How Do I Stop Snoring When I Sleep on My Side – Natural Cure Snoring

Glenn Kneeland | December 28, 2009

How do I stop snoring when I sleep on my side? Many people who suffer from this problem are interested to look for a natural cure for snoring, and one of the most widely discussed methods is to sleep on the side. Different people will have different reasons for snoring.

Most tend to snore because of a build up and congestion of mucus while others can do so due to weight problems. Luckily, there are some natural solutions that can be used to deal with snoring, and one of the methods that worked for me is the stop snoring exercise program that I found online.

1. What Are the Main Reasons Why People Snore?

There can be many reasons, but some of the most common ones would be nasal allergies and congestion, as well as common colds that might arise as a result of seasonal change. Snoring occurs when there is an enlargement of the tonsils and adenoids that affects the breathing system.

2. How Do I Stop Snoring When I Sleep On My Side?

Sleeping on the side is one way to reduce the amount of snoring as it can help prevent congestion in the nasal parts of the body. Solving this problem can be very important as it can cause some health problems such as irregular breathing and excessive loud snoring. This scenario is also known as sleep apnea. Besides sleeping on the side, one can also try other methods such as starting a more regular exercise routine to lose more weight and also by reducing the use of sleeping pills.

3. Is There Really A Natural Cure for Snoring?

Most people who look for doctors to cure this problem usually end up being recommended with lots of medication with decongestants used to reduce the allergies. Luckily, I managed to find a natural stop snoring cure exercise program that got rid of my snoring problem before.

Stop Snoring Surgery – How Do You Cure Snoring

Glenn Kneeland |

So how do you cure snoring with Stop Snoring Surgery? Most people who want to get a solution to their snoring problem would have heard of stop snoring surgery but are not sure about whether it would really work. Before that, the typical solution offered by most doctors would be medications and other remedies. Luckily, I did not get myself a surgery and eventually managed to cure snoring with a simple exercise program found online.

1. Does a Stop Snoring Surgery Really Work?

Surgery for stopping the problem of snoring is definitely one of the ways that some people have used to effectively deal with snoring. Surgery is able to widen a person’s airway by removing the excessive tissues in the throat. This type of surgery is known as uvulopalaoharyngoplasty (UPPP). However, you must understand the potential long term risks that you may face. Surgery may make swallowing more difficult and the recovery period may take quite a few weeks.

2. How Do You Cure Snoring Naturally?

Instead of using surgery, I managed to find a stop snoring exercise program that worked naturally to stop all my snoring woes. It did not require me to use any medication or surgery methods. The exercises served to change my breathing pattern and I am very pleased that it has helped me to stop snoring.

3. Cure Snoring with Nasal Stop Snoring Surgery

Another type of surgery is nasal surgery. If the problem lies in a deviated septum, nasal surgery will be able to correct it as well as get rid of all blockages and obstructions in the nose that are causing the problems. It uses radiofrequency energy to shrink or get rid of the excessive tissues. Snoring can be caused by obstructions and blockages that lead to a person snoring. This is also called coblation channeling.

Stop Snoring Products – Remedies For Snoring Help

Glenn Kneeland | December 27, 2009

Do you want to learn how to naturally cure snoring with the most effective stop snoring products? You need to first understand what exactly is causing the problem before you can start to find the right type of treatment. The causes will help you determine whether the treatment that you want to use will work or not.

1. Which Stop Snoring Products Should You Get?

For some people, the cause of the smoking problem can be really easy to stop, such as excessive smoking or drinking and eating too much dairy products before sleeping. Some of these problems can be easily solved with methods such as sleeping on the side etc. However, others suffer from causes that are more deep-rooted and will need other types of treatment methods. My own snoring problem was not easy to cure, but luckily I managed to do it with an online stop snoring exercise program.

2. How Do You Naturally Cure Snoring?

Anything that makes the air passageway narrow will lead to snoring. There are many reasons how this can happen, which explain why different people can have different reasons for snoring. Finding the true cause of your own narrowed air passage leading to your snoring is important if you want to cure snoring. Some substances that can cause muscles in the throat to relax would include drugs, medication as well as alcohol. Narrowing the air passageway also makes the tongue fall back, blocking the passage that eventually leads to snoring.

3. Using Simple Over The Counter Sprays

One simple treatment that has worked for some people is to use an over the counter nasal spray. It clears a stuffy nose to allow it to play a bigger role in the taking in of air into the body. Thus, the throat would not have to take in as much as and as a result, cause a reduction in snoring.

What Are The Causes & Snoring Cure? – Procedure To Stop Snoring

Glenn Kneeland | December 26, 2009

Do you want to find out the causes and the proper cure and Procedure to Stop Snoring? You may have already tried several methods like talking to your doctor to find the best solution, and have maybe even started taking medication but finding that there are not many benefits. One of the options that many people are not willing to try is surgery, but are there any other alternatives and natural solutions available to solve the problem?

There are many different types of products online that can help one to reduce snoring at night, such as sleep masks connected to a pump that applies pressure to prevent the throat from collapsing. This type of sleep mask can be very expensive, costing over $1,000s. Even though some have claimed that they work, they can be uncomfortable and inconvenient.

1. Should You Take the Surgery Procedure to Stop Snoring?

Surgery can be done to widen a person’s airway to help him or her decrease snoring. This is through the process of removing excess tissues in the throat. One of the most common surgeries is UPPP, also known as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.

It is a form of laser treatment that cuts away the uvula and shortens the soft palate. Even though it may provide good results in the early stages, it could cause some serious side effects in the long run. Swallowing can become much more difficult and the recovery phase typically takes about 3 weeks to complete.

2. What Are The Main Causes of Snoring and The Main Available?

Different people will have different causes to snoring, which is why there are different types of cures that work for everyone. Each person reacts differently to the various types of cures. I personally got cured with a stop snoring exercise program which I learned online which had cured the root causes of my snoring problem.

However, a small group of people have found that the best way for them is to consult their doctors and use the best surgery. A few lucky ones have found that simply putting additional pillows underneath their head while they sleep solves the problem.
