Teeth are used to chew and break down food to make swallowing easy and aid digestion. They are made of many tissues. The roots of teeth are covered by gum. Teeth are affected by different types of diseases which make the affected person to experience a lot of suffering.
Plague is a bacteria that thrives on the tooth’s surface when food on them is left uncleaned. If not stopped, this soft, sticky and colorless bacteria multiplies and may cause the tooth’s enamel to break. It becomes sensitive and decays.
Gingivitis is commonly known as gum disease. It is caused by plague multiplication its damage progresses slowly. As a result, the gum swells and bleeds easily. All teeth may be affected if it is untreated and they gradually fall off.
Plague left on teeth for a long period develops into tartar which is a thick coating. It forms acids on your teeth. These acids cause damage to the tooth’s surface thus producing cavities.
Cavities are usually caused by sugar bacterial acids that dissolve the enamel. They damage the tooth’s structure. If not treated quickly they can cause a lot of pain. Cavities lead to tooth decay and even teeth loss.
Halitosis is caused by food caught between teeth. If teeth are not well cleaned, the food degrades and causes bad breath. Both the individual’s personal and social life can be affected by this. This can make their self esteem low.
Periodontal disease is when the teeth lose bones around them. It is as a result of advanced gum disease. The teeth become loose and eventually fall off if it is not checked.
Stained teeth are caused by some foods that we consume. These include coffee, sodas and smoking. If teeth are stained a dentist should be consulted to determine the cause of the stains and treatment that can be given.
Some people grind and clench their teeth unknowingly when they are asleep. Stress or teeth that are not well aligned may cause teeth grinding. Grinding can break teeth, destroy the enamel or cause jaw and muscle problems.
One way of preventing teeth diseases is to brush them after breakfast and before sleeping. Using Dental floss, mouthwash and toothpaste can assist in prevention of these problems. These diseases can be cured. A visit to the dentist on a regularly basis is a lovely idea too.
