Is Running Better Than Walking?

If you want to get fit you have probably looked into walking or running for fitness. If you have looked into these forms of exercise the chances you are not sure which form of exercise is best out of the two. There is quite a lot of conflicting advice that leads to this common confusion. Which is right for you is dependent on your current level of fitness and what your fitness goals are.

Walking is good for virtually anyone because it is a low impact form of exercise. Running or jogging is high impact meaning that if you have any weaknesses in your joints you will eventually end up injured. If you are at all unsure about your fitness start by walking.

If you are already fit jogging or running makes sense. This form of exercise is especially beneficial if your main aim is to lose weight. Jogging burns far more calories than walking, so it is far more efficient form of exercise. However remember that there is no point in taking up running if you are going to end up damaging your joints and crippling yourself.

Walking, jogging or running to lose weight is a strategy many people use successfully. However, these kinds of exercise are more effective at making sure that you to keep the weight off once you have lost it. To lose weight using exercise alone is impossible you need to cut back on calorie consumption too. Continuing to walk or run after you have lost your weight is important if you want to keep it off.

So in conclusion the best strategy is to begin by walking. If after a couple of weeks you feel OK you can try jogging for a minute, walking for two then jogging again for a minute. Slowly increase the amount of jogging you do. If you find your joints cannot withstand jogging try power walking instead. Do not overtax yourself.
